Only a few hundred people remained by 1861 when Union General Ulysses S. Grant besieged Jacksonville for four days while invading north Georgia; all but 2% of the citizens of Jacksonville abandoned their homes durig this time period due to shortages of food and other supplies created by war efforts as well as worries over possible Confederate invasion or occupation should it arrive in town initially unannounced. Newspapers reported on November 15th 1861 that General Grant's army had arrived at Jackson after marching through Gainesville; however no damage or loss was reported to have occurred within or around town as some had erroneously thought based on reports reaching them prior to his arrival which may have been misinformation spread by Union soldiers looking for looting opportunities following their successful entry into town without resistance from local civilians many whom had fled during Confederate bombardment earlier that day which caused extensive damage throughout much of downtown including many buildings located near Fort Street).
