Florida City is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 37,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Ft. Lauderdale–Polk County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Florida City was first settled by European Americans in the mid-19th century as part of what was known as "the Caloosahatchee Nation". In 1859, Jacksonville developer James Fenton bought 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River and founded Florida City on it, naming it for his old home state of Florida. A year later, he sold 1,000 acres (400 ha) to John Pemberton and Benjamin Chapman for $1 million. This land comprised most of present-day Flagler County. In 1892, J.P. Morgan bought 2,800 acres (900 ha) between Flagler Beach and Jupiterkeys from Drury Lane Properties owners John Dinning and George Pease Jr.. Morgan leased this land to developers who built a phosphate mine there until 1906 when ownership passed to Jardine & Co., Ltd.. The mine closed in 1934 but left behind a legacy including a long runway still used today by cargo planes travelling from Miami International Airport to Pembroke Pines Naval Air Station south of town; an airfield named after him that served as an airport for military training flights during World War II; baseball diamonds adjacent to both airports; and a community center which became the first purpose-built public building in Fla.-City when it opened in 1963. In 1965, IBM moved its main campus from New York City to their new world headquarters across Fort Pierce Bay from downtown Miami near Biltmore Estate then called "Mile High" because only high school students could get into nearby IBM buildings while adults had to go downwind where they were housed inside schools or malls like Coral Gables or West Palm Beach which also developed around this time In 1978 Sunbeam Electric Industries Incorporated relocated their operations out west along I-95 North near Interstate 4 Everglades Parkway with new plant/distribution facilities built just outside what is now downtown FL Citrusville near US 41/I-4 exit #9 . They renamed their facility "Sunbeam Communities" before eventually selling off all assets including its plant north of IC 95 within 10 years . Thereafter Citrusville lost much if not all its manufacturing activity due mainly to imports beginning in the late 1990's but retains some residential housing developments around US 41 interchange leading directly into Downtown FL currently home mostly TOO numerous truck stops !!
