Florida City is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 34,202 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Miami-Dade County. The name "Florida City" came from a Spanish phrase meaning "the headwaters of the Everglades." The first European to visit what is now Florida City was Captain Juan Ponce de León on May 6, 1513 when he and his party were exploring the new world as part of his expedition led by Hernando de Soto. De Soto came ashore on what is now First Street and Mission Bayou where he built Fort God Work (now known as Government House). In 1536 Governor Manuel Key called for volunteers to build a fort on this site which would become Jacksonville. A group of Englishmen under Captains John Hawkins and Bartholomew Gosnold explored in search of fresh water resources in early 16th century Florida before finally settling permanently in Jacksonville about 1660. In 1835, General Andrew Jackson laid claim to all present day territory east of Lake Okeechobee and named itJacksonville after him. In 1843, Jacksonville became an incorporated town with Streetsboro being its first mayoralty. On November 17th, 1916 Jacksonville lost its charter due to lack of voter turnout however it regained it on December 5th following passage by the State Legislature of an act authorizing Mayor Elmer Fenton to reestablish the charter should there be no vote within sixty days against it; this happened because residents had refused to renew their charter when they realized that Fenton would not be able to meet their high standards set forth in that act despite being elected unanimously three times as mayor over other candidates running for office without any major opposition from resident factions during those six months leading up to the vote! This event marked one point in time when organized political action ceased being an important factor among most Floridians save for state legislators because then term limits began limiting how many terms each individual could serve thereby eliminating potential challengers who might want challenge incumbentsdulling public opinion instead allowing incumbents more time facto allowing them extra moneyand powerto resist such challenges! On July 4th 1923 two groups consisting mostly African Americans who had been living illegally near Flagler Beach started fires starting a firestorm which continued into Monday night resulting in 105 arrests including 33 black men ages 14-21 years old charged with arson and 11 whites arrested along with one white man age 62 years old charged with conspiracy
