Florida City, Florida is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It is located on the Sawgrass River and has a population of about 33,000 as of the 2010 census. The original inhabitants of this area were Native American Seminoles. After the United States acquired Florida from Spain in 1814, General Andrew Jackson built FortJackson here to control Indian trade. In 1835, when Congress created Tallahassee as the capital of Florida and moved the seat from St. Augustine to Tallahassee, FortJackson was renamed Tampa for General James K. Polk after he became President of the United States. In 1886, Ponce de Leon discovered what would become known as Tampa Bay while exploring northeast Florida with his Amerindian allies. A group of Englishmen led by Commodore John Caulfield sailed downriver to explore this new land in 1792 and named it after Pierre Marquette (1694-1768), who had explored part of what is now Michigan Territory prior to that year's French colony establishment at Saint UST/Mission Viejo (present-day Jacksonville). The first permanent European settlement in what is now Hillsborough County was founded by British forces under Captain John Smith at Fort Moultrie on July 20th, 1764 as Morro Bay Station during America's War for Independence against Spain; it served as an important staging ground for early operations against Spanish forces along the then Spanish coast east of Tampa Bay. By 1800 there were over 100 European settlers living in Tampa Baytown; by 1850 there were 553 families residing therein according to US Census records In 1851 Major George Pickering organized and commanded Company D2d U S Marines during contemporaneous Seminole Wars fought between American revolutionaries and Spanish troops defending Cuba; he later achieved national fame when he successfully negotiated surrender terms for First Seminole War leader Manuel de la Vega y Osorio on April 10th, 1852 at Pinellas Park near Clearwater Beach following which both nations terminated hostilities two days later On December 1st 1830s a band led by Menahem Shumatey arrived at Lake Okeechobee where they set up their advanced trading post called Foxville within present day Gulf Breeze: its ruins are still visible today just south of I-95 exit 147A off SR 341 ( concurrent SR 341/I-95exit) just inside Guantanamo State Forest boundary . They may have been among earliest white Americans known west of Mexico City
