The town was founded by Confederate veterans in 1861, and the military has been a big part of the history and culture here ever since. The first military gift to Eustis came from Confederate General John A. McClellan. He gifted an artillery piece to the town in 1865, and it remains one of the most iconic pieces in town today. Eustis also had its own military unit, The 2nd Battalion, Florida Infantry Regiment (2FIR), which served during World War II. The unit was disbanded after the war, but its members still maintain a presence in the town through their civic organizations and events. Eustis, Florida is located in the Miami-Dade County area of South Florida. The population of Eustis was 22,965 at the 2010 census. The town began as a small farming community on the banks of the Eustis River. In 1854, Colonel Edwin D. Morgan established a trading post here and named it for General Elisha Porter Alexander, who had been killed in action during the Mexican-American War. In 1875, Gadsden Purchase landowner Wm. C. Fenton donated 4,000 acres (1 km²) to Eustis Township – now part of Miami-Dade County – with an understanding that its inhabitants would help to develop the area into a commercial center and agricultural center. In 1887, Jno.–Maj., Peter Knerman founded what is now Coral Gables as an independent school for black children in response to white philanthropists' opposition to public education for black children in Cuba and other parts of Latin America. On November 12th of that year, Knerman's school became Eustis High School when it opened its doors to students from both Cuban and American schools in what is today known as "Knerman Plaza." For many years after its opening, this was considered one of South Florida's most prestigious educational institutions; even after integration (in 1964), EHS remained racially segregated until 1990 when it became Miami–Dade County's first all-white public high school (along with Hialeah High School). In 1967 - just prior to becoming an unincorporated municipality - Eustis voters passed a resolution authorizing annexation by Miami-Dade County under then-County Commissioner James Buchanan’s proposal that included “the erection within our limits by any person or persons whatsoever of a building or structure which shall house or be used for any purpose whatsoever connected with education” (Buchanan 1988). Upon annexation confirmation by county commissioners on December 5th 1967 - less than two months before incorporation - Mayor Jack Hughes presented annexation papers at city hall where he stated: "We have put everything together so you can see we are serious" (Hughes 2007a pgs 9 & 10). The new municipality quickly gained notoriety due to their innovative planning strategy including plans for freezer Dahntay Jones Arena which still stands today as one of South Florida's largest sports venues; comprehensive land reclamation projects resulting in increased capacity for wateratial services; and construction costs associated with unique infrastructure such as: A toll road connecting I-95/I-10 interchange with US 1/SR 20 eastbound; A bypass route around downtown serving mostly agriculture purposes only; A light rail line linking Fort Lauderdale Beach via NE 141st Street westbound with Kendall Road eastbound which opened service January 1st 2001 A recent addition to this list is their commitment to sustainable development including legislation establishing them as an official City Of Sustainable Communities
