Deltona is a small town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,549 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Daytona Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located approximately 20 miles (32 km) east of Daytona Beach. Deltona has a humid subtropical climate which can be seen from its mild weather all year round with average highs in the mid-20s degrees Celsius and lows in the low 10s degrees Celsius. The town's name comes from two Long Island Rail Road sidings that were used to transport goods between those stations during the early days of this area's development. Deltona was incorporated on November 3, 1907 and named for Mrs. A.F. Stockbridge who donated land to make this community possible and also contributed funds towards building a railroad station thereon. As time passed and more people started moving into the area they needed new roads so on July 4th 1916, a road was dedicated which became known as "Mrs. Stockbridge Blvd." By 1922 there were three schools in Deltona - one for white children and two for black children - both administered by various churches within the community through their respective denominational calendars - one Protestant then Baptist while another Methodist did operate an elementary school until 1954 when it merged into what is now Orange Park Elementary School; before that it was known as First Presbyterian Church School according to current records). In 1926 Deltona had its own post office which still operates today (it moved from downtown to an annexe near present day US 34 about four years ago). Deltona was founded in 1892 by J.C. Brown, a lawyer and landowner who also developed the town's first store, courthouse and school. The early days of Deltona were difficult: the town was only one mile wide and one mile long, with only a dozen homes. ButBrown knew what he wanted, and he started building things he thought would make his community better. He built a school, a store, a courthouse and more than 100 homes. The town grew quickly because of its access to water supply and its location on the Gulf of Mexico. By 1915, Deltona had over 1,000 residents and was using electricity for the first time. The town became known for its fishing restaurants – some of which remain open to this day – as well as its shopping districts that included several stores and several churches. In the 1960s, Deltona experienced starting up again after being hit hard by crime in other parts of Florida. It wasn't until 1990 that it became an incorporated municipality once more thanks to passage of statutes created specifically for Deltona by Republican Congressman Bob Ney (R-Lakeland). In 2004, voters passed Measure M (the Tampa Bay Water Save) which limited property values in Deltona while preserving much of its historical infrastructure including schools, businesses and residences dating back to 1892
Deltona was founded in 1879 by J.C. Beaumont and H.M. Beaumont as a community on the shores of Lake Okeechobee. The town growth began with the construction of a railroad station in 1887, followed by sawmills and other businesses in the early years. By 1931, Deltona had become an important center for citrus production and became known as "The Citrus Capital of the World." In 1945, during World War II, Deltona was one of two American cities to be bombed by Japanese forces, resulting in heavy damage to the town but no loss of life. In 1978, Deltona became a city after being granted city status by Florida's governor Ron Brown. The city's population has grown steadily over the years, reaching over 60,000 people as of 2018.
