Deltona is a town in Citrus County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,724 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by pioneers on land that was part of what is now Orange County and has been inhabited by Native American and Spanish colonists for more than 350 years. The area now known as Deltona was first settled in 1784 by Captain John Smith and his party after they discovered a rich oil well on the Gulf of Mexico. In 1836, General David Hogg divided Citrus County into two parts – one including Deltona, would become Seminole County while the other including Deltona would become Volusia County. In 1907, during the same time period that citrus farming became an important industry in present-day Florida, citrus growers from as far away as California brought their crops to southern Florida to be processed into fruit juices and liqueurs. Today's sugarcane plantations are also significant sources of economic development in this area; although today sugarcane production takes place primarily for ethanol production, it still employs many people directly or indirectly involved with agriculture throughout the year. In 1909 Deltona voters passed a referendum authorizing annexation by Lakeland which then annexed the town without any vote being taken by residents. On July 1st 1912 Deltona incorporated as a city under state law with its own mayor and city council system similar to those found in most major U.S cities of that era such as New York City and Chicago IL etc.; this incorporation created new problems for both businesses owners within city limits who had wanted their properties annexation into the larger community but were not happy about having their business operations subordinated to those of Lakeland; however Mayor Ladd did manage to make some progress towards resolving these issues over time through negotiation and compromise until he ultimately resigned office in 1916 due to health reasons (he would later die at age 94). The early 20th century saw some rapid growth within Deltona both due to Interstate 95 construction that paralleled much of southcentral Floridas growth at this time (the highway bisecting Citrus county) but also because numerous manufacturing plants opened up along I-95 resulting in an increase in jobs for local citizens who labored on these factories ensuing turnover rates so high that many workers never even got paid minimum wage (this trend continued into nearby Kissimmee until well after I-95 closed down). As I-95 gradually improved following World War II growth slowed again before picking up slightly during the 1970s when developers started building new subdivisions proximate to downtown causing yet another huge turnover rate among workers creating large numbers of homeless individuals living atop abandoned warehouses/trucks etc.; however since then Mattress Firm Inc., KFC Corporation et al have all made big investments adjacent downtown making significant changesovertime eking out relatively low rents while providing ample parking spaces for employees etc.; meanwhile much attention has recently been focused on redeveloping acreage adjoining US-1 bordering downtown which once encompassed most if not all of what is now used parkland within walking distance of modern day retail buildings; although there has been no real progressmade thusfar despite multiple attempts at mediation between developers/city officials various fences remain intact preventing truly expansive redevelopment possibilities from happening; nevertheless it remains somethingof an open question whether or not future efforts will resultin reversing decadeslong trends regarding property values & employment opportunities within Downtown Deltona
Deltona was founded on December 12, 1892 by John C. Delton and his family. The town was named after Deltona Beach, Florida where he had been born in 1869. The first store in the town opened its doors on July 1, 1893. The first post office was established in 1898. By 1905, the population of Deltona hadgrown to over 300 residents and it had its own school system. In 1922, the local paper company merged with another company and became known as the Jacksonville Journal-Telegram Company. By 1933, Deltona's population totaled 521 people and it had its own TV station, WJXT-TV. In 1935, a new airport was built to serve the town and by 1946 it had become a major center for air travel in central Florida with three runways serving different airports within minutes of each other. On January 2nd of that year, Stonington Avenue (now 15th Street) in downtown Deltona was renamed after General James "Jimmy" Doolittle who flew into Miami from Japan during World War II as part ofOperation Overlord when he flew Operation Neptune's Spear which landed at Key West on October 26th 1942
