The first coffee roasters in De Land were Captain John Kapp and his son, Captain George Kapp. In 1892, Captain George's brother-in-law,William Laird, opened the First Coffee House on Orange Avenue. William Laird was the first person to roast coffee beans commercially in De Land. From 1897 until his death in 1906, Captains John and George Kapp ran the Second CoffeeHouse on New Street. In 1907, Captains John and George's father-in-law, Samuel Bowman bought the Third CoffeeHouse on State Road 568. Samuel Bowman was a major player in the history of DeLand coffee culture and is considered one of its most successful entrepreneurs. He was responsible for developingDeLand's unique flavor profile and establishing it as a leading center for roasting coffee. From 1916 until his death in 1978, Mr. Bowman was president of Waffle House Corporation which operated over sixty independent Waffle Houses throughout Florida. His legacy is still felt today at many local restaurants across the state that serve up delicious breakfast foods such as waffles and pancakes made with fresh roasted coffee!
DeLand, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. DeLand is known for its natural resources and history. The first humans to live in De Land were Native American settlers who arrived in 1763. They named their settlement "Tallahassee." A post office was established in 1836, but it was discontinued in 1837 due to the Seminole Wars. In 1841, the town gained its charter from the state of Florida and became a city. The first mayor was John Hoggarty. In 1898, Julius Caesar Stoneman founded Stone Mountain Park as a place for people to enjoy nature without having to worry about getting involved in politics or wars. Stone Mountain Park has since become one of Miami-Dade County's most popular tourist attractions with over 100 miles (160 km) of hiking trails and 10 dams on its lakeside property that provide water sports such as fishing and kayaking opportunities for visitors. De Land, Florida was founded by the De Soto Expedition in 1540. The De Sotos were Spanish explorers who explored the southeastern United States during the early 16th century. They named their new land Santa Fé de la Bahía de Cuba, which means "Holy Bay of Havana." The site of present-day De Land was first settled by Native Americans in this area during the seventeenth century. The name Miami is derived from Miamis, a tribe of Creek people that lived in this area before Europeans arrived. The first European to settle in what is now DeLand was John Smith, who purchased land from the local Seminole Indians in 1738. In 1772, British General James Grant awarded a tract of land to Captain George Rogers Clark for his exploration and conquest of Indian Territory. The lands lying between Pensacola and Tallahassee were part of this grant and became known as Grant County. Captain John Stonington erected a sawmill on the Suwannee River near present-day Live Oak Lane on March 8, 1819. This mill became one of the earliest commercial enterprises in DeLand after it began production two years earlier than any other business in town at that time. It operated until 1903 when it was replaced by a more modern plant owned by Gulf Stream Lumber Company. Live Oak Lane still stands as one of DeLand's most iconic landmarks today! During World War II, many jobs were created within local government due to military training programs that took place here at various locations across Florida including Serra Mesa Elementary School and Fort Myers Army Base Camps I and II (now Goodyear Air Force Base). Thousands of Floridians participated in these programs including soldiers stationed here during both world wars! Many veterans returned home with valuable skills and knowledge which has helpedFLORIDA economy grow over the years!
De Land was a community in Franklin County, Florida. It was founded in 1884 by John de Land and his wife Eliza C. de Land. The De Lands were among the earliest white settlers in what is now Franklin County. They built their first home on the present-day site of DeLand in 1885. In 1886, they started a small grocery store there and soon developed a large market for fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy products. By 1907, the town had a population of about 150 people. Its growth slowed during World War I and World War II because of military service and scarce resources; however, it regained some popularity after the war when new residents came to town to work in the phosphate mines that were located nearby. The town's population peaked at 300 people in 1958 but declined thereafter due to mortality rates from cancer and other illnesses; however, it has since rebounded somewhat with recent immigrants coming to town to take advantage of its Clonee culture (a type of African American music).
