The Daytona Beach Police Department has been a part of the community for over 60 years. From its humble beginnings as an on-the-street patrol officer in 1922, the department has grown and evolved into one of the most complex law enforcement agencies in the area. Today, the Dayton Beach Police Department is composed of more than 100 officers and support personnel who provide service to citizens of Daytona Beach, Martin County and Clay County. The department’s history can be traced back to 1922 when Officer Harry Dickey was hired as a police constable on Miami Avenue in Daytona Beach. At that time, there were only two squad cars and no uniformed officers. The department quickly became known as “The boys from Daytona Beach” for their hard work and dedication to keeping order in the community. In 1951, Officer John Burgess was appointed captain of the Dayton Beach Police Department. Captain Burgess led the department through some tough times during the early days of television coverage throughout Florida which had a significant impact on policing. He also helped develop methods for tracking crime suspects through fingerprinting and other technologies which continued to play a role in today’s policing procedures. In fact, many current officers havegone directly from Patrolman to Major or even Deputy Sheriff status thanks toCaptain Burgess efforts at Dayton Beach PD! In 1958, Officer Harry Vinson was appointed sergeant of the Dayton Beach Police Department with responsibility for providing leadership and training within his unit. Sergeant Vinson played an important role in developing policy decisions that would guide future operations within the department. He also spearheaded numerous programs which assistance victims of crime including Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) classes for high school students. This outreach program eventually lead to widespread drug legalization across Florida! In 1979, Officers Wally Cooksey and Don Fahy were named captains after serving long periods as enlisted men with distinction during World War II prior to their appointment as police officers with duty assignments at Daytona beachPD After leaving active military service they began working at PD full time . They immediately started implementing new policies which soon became well known by all members of this force . Under their leadership Dayton BeachPD achieved great success such as becoming accredited with American Law Enforcement Association (ALEA) Standards & Practices standards which made it easier for other law enforcement agencies to adopt similar practices . In 1984 , Captains Bob Lemon & Rick Sheppard were named Assistant Chiefs effective January 1st 1985 under then Chief Donahue……….Bob Lemon left concurrent employment with State Troopers Service Bureau after 12 years…..Rick Sheppard will serve until November 30th 2020

It is located on Daytona Beach Boulevard and Front Street, across the street from Moody's Bazaar. The first Europeans to visit what is now Daytona Beach were Frenchmen in 1565 and Spaniards in 1568. The area that became Daytona Beach was originally known as "Thirteenmile Point" because it was where the Miami River connected with Key West. In 1834, John Fenton bought 640 acres (248 hectares) of undeveloped land east of present-day Main Street for $8 per acre ($). He named it "Fenton's Landing". By 1835, most of what is now Daytona Beach had been developed as part of Palm beach County by Jeptha Chilton with Fenton taking over management from him. In 1840, when James Kapp purchased 2,057 acres (847 hectares) between US 1 and 3rd Street for $10 per acre ($), he renamed it “Kapp’s Landing” after himself and built a small plantation house thereon which he used as his home until his death in 1865. From 1830 until 1875, Kapp was one of several white men who ran this part of Florida; others included Ebenezer Scroggin and Judah Levy. On October 28th 1865–the date following James Kapp’s death–the area around modern day Main Street became part of Municipal Court District 8 when Volusia County was created from Palm Beach County. The first school in what is now Daytona Beach opened its doors to children on November 5th1892: Mrs Maud Estridge started
