Daytona Beach was founded on February 12, 1926 as a small fishing village on Biscayne Bay by Harry Fenton and his family. The name "Daytona" originated from an early settler's idea that the bay would be called "Emmaliga", which means "the place where white people can live." The city started off as just a few hundred homes with only 10 businesses. By 1928, Daytona had become one of America's most famous seaside towns because it boasted world-famous racing cars like Ford Pinto and Chevrolet Camaro models and its own beachfront amusement park called the Daytona Beach World Fairgrounds. In 1932, Daytona annexed neighbouring Port Royal Island to become its own municipality. In 1966, when Interstate 95 was built through central Jacksonville, portions of Daytona Beach were included in the new interstate highway system as well. This meant more people came into town and less space for businesses to grow; however, over time business owners have managed to redevelop their properties keeping the town's downtown core alive and vibrant with century-old architecture and historical landmarks
In 1887, the Daytona Beach Board of Education purchased land at the mouth of Ali Baba's cave to establish a school. The first students attended classes in what is now known as "The Old School" on First Street. In 1896, the school moved to its present location on Third Street and became one of the first public schools in Daytona Beach. In 1907, the school was renamed "The Daytona Beach Academy". In 1912, it become one of two high schools in Daytona Beach when The Volusia County Agricultural School closed. On December 8, 1933, The Daytona Beach Board of Education approved a plan to build a new high school and name it after Dr. J.C. Penney which would serve as both an elementary and secondary school until 1941 when it merged with The University Of Florida High School which had been established two years earlier. On January 1, 1935, Dr. J C Penney High School opened its doors to students in grades 10-12 after over twenty months of construction by local builders and volunteers under guidance from Superintendent W T Lowery who also served as the academy's first president In 1938-39 there was a significant fire that destroyed much of campus including Buildings 4 & 5 (now called White Hall). A large donation from Mrs John D Clarke enabled reconstruction which began on October 15th 1939 and ended on November 30th 1940 A new gymnasium was built adjacent to White Hall (now known as Steele Gym) during this time . On February 9th 1953 mascot “Pogo” passed away due to natural causes but his spirit still remains at Steele Gym where programs are held each year for Pogo Day
