The Daytona Beach area has been inhabited by the Seminole people for thousands of years. The area was first settled in 1765 when Captain John Stroud and his party founded a trading post on the "Island of Daytona." In 1836, Colonel James K. Polk, President of the United States, came to Daytona Beach to inspect the construction project of the new railway. When he saw how well the town was built, he ordered General Andrew Jackson to move his army from Mobile to Florida so that Jacksonville could be occupied by Americans. Because Jacksonville was too dangerous for American troops to stay in, Polk then decided to build a military post in Daytona Beach instead. The first permanent settler in Daytona Beach was Abram Allen who arrived in 1837 and named it after himself – "Andrea Alonzo" or "Andrew Akron". The first store on Indian Key Boulevard opened its doors on December 12th, 1838. A millinery called "The Belle of Dayton" became one of America's most popular businesses during the late 1800s due to its high quality fabrics and unique designs. By 1860, over 100 businesses had opened up around what is now known as downtown Daytona Beach. With such an influx of businesses and residents, some began calling this town "the friendly city." One important business activity during this time was whaling which continued until about 1870 due to lack of available supplies and competition from other industries like steel production at Pittsburgh! From 1840-1860 there were also several schools located within walking distance of each other: Great Western Female School (now part of University Avenue Elementary), Holy Cross Female School (now part of Dunedin High School), and Our Lady's Academy (later became South Side High School). Because no roads were yet constructed within this region - transportation wasn't an issue until later! In 1851-1852 two churches were built; First Presbyterian Church (now Old Main) on Indian Key Boulevard and Second Baptist Church which is now Christmastime Place Mall! This growth did not stop there however; within just five years fromowntown's incorporation into a municipality (in 1861), buildings had already been erected for four more schools: Holy Cross Male/Female PrimarySchool (now Dunedin Intermediate School), First Presbyterian Junior/Senior Highschool Annexe(renamed Eastside Middle school after merger with nearby First Presbyterian Girls' Senior Highschool), Second Baptist Female/Male PrimarySchool(renamed Northside Middle school after merger with nearby Second Baptist Boys' Senior Highschool) - making downtown one large school district! It wasn't until 1912 that electric headlights were brought onto local streets which caused quite a stir throughout town! As if everything weren't enough already...in 1932 Drifting Clouds Brewing Company opened up shop right next door to what is now Wawa Supermarket!!! Needless To say, today's vibrant community has roots that go back many decades!!!!!!!!
