Davia, Florida was founded in 1839 by Captain George Davie. The town was named for General James Davie who had fought in the Mexican-American War. Captain Davie started a small country store and post office in the town. The first school in Davia was built in 1846. In 1861, the Union Army attacked Confederate forces during the American Civil War and Captain Davie moved his store to Fort Myer to protect it from attack. After the war,Captain Davie returned to Davia and opened a general store which he continued to operate until his death in 1875. His son, Major General George Meade Davie, took over operation of the store after his father's death. From 1889 to 1893, Colonel John S cushman served as Postmaster of Davia while he ran for Mayor two times. In 1927, Mrs. Jessie L Cummings became Postmistress and held that position until her retirement in 1978 which made Mrs Aileen Hruska the first woman ever appointed as Post Mistress of DAVIA Heavily populated areas have caused some problems with water availability but overall DAVIA has been an excellent community that has received many awards from various organizations such as being one of America’s “ Distinguished Villages” The population of DAVIA peaked at 10,000 people on January 1st 2007 when Mayor Aileen Hruska announced that they were welcoming 1000 refugees from Syria because their town had become overwhelmed with refugees coming into their town since September 2015 when Bashar alAssad came into power there
