In 1990, java hut opened up in Davie with a location on Northwest First Street. In 1998, Java Hut moved to its current location at 401 N Main Street and became the onlyjava Hut store in Florida open 24/7. Java Hut closed its doors in 2006 but reopened as Java Cafe back at 401 N Main Street two years later. In 2010, Java Cafe relocated back to its original spot on Northwest First Street and continues to serve coffee until 3am every day!
Davie, Florida is a small town in Lee County, Florida. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. Davie is located on US-1 and SR-382. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1879 by John Davenport as a post office named for David Davie, an Englishman who had settled in Lee County about that time. In 1903, Davie became an incorporated municipality with a population of 1,500 people. The first store opened in Davie in 1907 and the first school opened in 1909. The town's biggest claim to fame may be its glass production which began in the 1920s and continue until present day. In 1886, the first oil well was drilled in Davie and production began here in 1907. Today, Davie is home to several businesses including United States Steel Corporation (USSC), West Marine, Sears Roebuck & Co., A&P grocery store, and many other companies.
The Davie, Florida area was first populated in the late 1800s. In 1892, a group of investors founded the City of Davie and it became a municipality in 1893. The city was named for David Hogg, an early settler in the area. Between 1901 and 1912, Davie added 11 additional wards to its roster and reached its current size. The population growth led to increased infrastructure needs, which promoted economic development as businesses moved into the area. In 1924, a fire destroyed many of the buildings in downtown Davie and it took until 1957 for reconstruction to begin; this marked the beginning of what is now known as Davie's period of prosperity. After years of growth and modernization, Davie reached its peak population count in 2000 with over 50,000 residents. However, during the Great Recession that began in 2007-2009, business conditions deteriorated and by 2016 there were only 25 businesses operating in downtown Davie. Today much of what once made up downtown Davie is gone - most notably the structures built around 1925-1957 when downtown experienced significant redevelopment following World War II boom times. However some new residential developments are being built on land that once housed factory workers or other low-income residents who lost their homes during these same years of community decline.
