The Davie Historic District is a national historic district that includes all of what is now Davie and parts of Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties. It was established in 1892 as part of the St. Petersburg–Clearwater region by John Fenton and others who were inspired by the growth of Tampa Bay to make a new town in this area. The first settlers arrived from Scotland in early 1800s and soon started trading with Indians for goods they could not get from Europe. By 1825 there were over 100 Scots living in Davie Township; many had moved to this area because it became available for agriculture due to its low cost of land and good soils. In 1829, James Buchanan was elected president of the United States, setting off a period known as "the Era of Good Times." Many business people moved into the country during this time including JFenton who founded Fenton's Store on Clearwater Boulevard (now US 1) with his brother-in-law Andrew Johnson in 1829. Soon afterwards other storekeepers followed suit until everyone had an opportunity to trade and sell goods directly with American buyers without going through European traders or middlemen.
