Cutler Bay is located on the bayou that forms the border between Lee County and Sarasota County. The village was founded by John Cutler in 1881 as Cutler's Harbor on the now uninhabited island of Cutler Bay. He later moved his business to what is now downtown Cutler Bay and built a lumber mill there which he operated until 1904. In 1912, Wernher von Braun settled here with his family after leaving Germany for America to become a naturalized US citizen and help found space exploration programs at NASA. Von Braun's wife, Betty, also lived in Cutler Bay for many years before moving to Naples in 1997. The Village of Cutlerbay has experienced growth over time; it became incorporated as a municipality in 1964 and adopted its current name in 1987 when it merged with neighboring towns Lighthouse Pointe (to the north) and Sunrise Beach (to the south). Prior to this merger, both municipalities were known as "Cutlerbay". The current municipal government was first organized on November 3rd, 2009 under Artie Manfredi who served as Mayor from January 1st through December 31st of that year. On February 10th of that year elections were held and Artie Manfredi was reelected with 50% of the vote over challenger Brian Hickey In 1984 local residents created one pound per capita flag campaign because they felt their village could not compete against other nearby towns which had much more elaborate flags displays than theirs
