The United States Naval Academy (USNA) is one of the most highly respected institutions in American education, and its graduates are some of the most decorated naval officers in history. The academy's curriculum emphasizes maritime warfare and navigation, as well as traditional academic disciplines such as mathematics, science, politics and Latin. Coconut Creek resident Captains Clarence Kingman III (Ret.), Vice Admiral Willis Ladd Jr., Rear Admiral Vernon Averill ( Ret.) all played significant roles within Florida's Navy while they were Commanding Officers or Admirals with responsibility for Coast Guard activity along Coral Gables' shoreline dating back to World War I; these five men are considered members of "The Kings" who helped shape today's Coast Guard service culture hereabouts! Today there is still one active duty Naval vessel permanently moored off our town limits - that is USCGC Key West (CG 63) - providing coastal security patrols year round! She joined CG Lauderdale County Sheriff Department Auxiliary Squadron #1 commandeered from another coast guard agency circa 1990!!
