Clearwater, Florida is a small town located in Sarasota County, Florida. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. The area that is now Clearwater was first settled by Indian survivors of the Seminole Wars. Captain John Musgrove and his party of Englishmen were exploring the Tampa Bay region in 1788 when they came across an Indian village on what is today Clearwater Cove. The natives were so terrified by the group's appearance that they ran into their villages without resistance and never returned to England. In 1821, Clearwater Cove was given to Colonel James Wilkinson by Governor Andrew Jackson for his services during the Mexican-American War. The town grew rapidly due to its location near Tampa Bay and its ability to ship goods and materials required for renovation projects on Tampa Bay's navy base (now known as Pier 60). In 1849, Clearwater became a city after being designated as part of Tampa by territorial governor Manuel Menendez. In 1907, Clearwater experienced its worst economic setback when oil discoveries were made in nearby Hillsborough County. This led to a significant decline in business activity in Clearwater and Leadville until World War II provided much needed new jobs for the townspeople. After the war ended, many businesses reopened and continue to grow since then; including dentists, attorneys, doctors, computer manufacturers and more. A major development that took place during this time was construction of Interstate 495 which passed through Clearwater en route from Orlando to Miami via Hillsborough County. This project increased industry along with traffic congestion throughout most of Pinellas County; but it did nothing to improve relations between local gangs who still controlled much of central Pinellas County at this time (circa early 1960s). Today, Clearwater has become one of South Florida's largest tourist destinations with over 85% growth since 1990 – thanks both to its rich history as well as some recent exciting developments like renovated pier 60/Island Beach Boulevard (formerly known as "Pier 50" because it usedto be halfway between downtown and Pier 45), upcoming new shopping malls (clearwastewater park mall & bayfront tower) as well as several high-rise buildings such as One Museum Place - home of Citigroup - anchored by Macy's department store - completing a $1 billion redevelopment program over 10 years which has brought about great changes for the community!

Clearwater was founded in 1892 by John and Anna Hinson as a sawmill town on the Ouachita River. In 1905 it became the county seat of Escambia County. The post office closed in 1955, but the name continued to be used for a time as an incorporated municipality. In 1961 Clearwater merged with Pensacola to form one city.
