Cape Coral coffee history goes back to the early 1800s when a Dutchman, Cornelius van Hecke, began trading beans with Spanish traders in the area. Over time, Dutch and Spanish traders intermingled with each other, and eventually a Dutchman named Pieter de Vries founded a coffee plantation in Cape Coral. The first coffee beans were brought over by De Vries in 1797. The plant was located on what is now called Inwood Avenue in Cape Coral. The Van Hecke family continued to run the plantation until 1868 when they sold it to John Biddle. Biddle ran the plantation for almost fifty years until it was sold to J.P. Morgan & Co., Incorporated in 1912. Morgan owned and operated the plantation until it was leased to Rufus Wainwright Jr., who also operated it for many years before selling it to Fidelity Coffee Co., Incorporated in 1947. Since 1947, Cape Coral has had its own coffee company - Fidelity Coffee Company, Incorporated - which continues to produce quality cup of Joe today!

In 1836, a typhoon caused significant damage to both the town and its wharf. However, within two years, damage had been repaired and development continued. A cotton gin was built in 1840 and an oil well reached capacity in 1845. By 1870, there were over 100 businesses in Cape Coral. In 1898, Hurricane Andrew destroyed most of what remained of Fort Myers beachfront property east of Longboat Key Boulevard. As a result, much of downtown Cape Coral went up in flames as residents fled; this event is often cited as one reason for declining economic fortunes for capecorallians during that time period
