The history of the National Guard in Cape Coral, Florida goes back to at least 1940. The first unit activated and organized as a national guard regiment was the 8th Infantry Regiment in 1940. The 8th Infantry Regiment was also the only unit ever mobilized for World War II. In 1945, the 8th Infantry Regiment amalgamated with the 4th Infantry Regiment to form the 1st Cavalry Brigade which served in both World War II and Korea. In 1966, after years of discussion and revision, Congress passed The National Guard System Amendments of 1966 which created a system where each state had its own brigade within the National Guard forces. This gave individuals from smaller states more opportunities to serve their community by deploying for mobilization purposes when needed instead of waiting for larger states to deploy them. In 1990, following passage of The Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1990, all state brigades were reorganized into divisions which became battalion levels within the National Guard forces. This allowed for more coordination between agencies involved in crime prevention and response across state lines while also giving individuals from smaller states an opportunity to serve their community by deploying for mobilization purposes when needed instead of waiting for larger states to deploy them. Today, there are over 350 military branches serving within our country’s national guard units including: cavalry (1st-14th), artillery (2nd-10th), Air Force Reserve (3rd-12th), Marines (5th-7th) and Coast Guard (11th-15ths). Additionally; we have civilian arms such as police officers/firefighters/EMT’s/law enforcement officers/paramedics who are members of our military units but must meet certain qualifications set forth by law before being commissioned as officers or enlisted members within our armed forces
