Callaway is a small town in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,613 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. Callaway is located in Escambia County on US-27 and US-81. The Callaway community takes its name from nearby Callaway Lake which was named for George Washington Carver who came to this area in 1871. Other early settlers were Isham Burch and his wife Sarah who built two log homes on what is now US-81 just east of where the village stands today. Mrs. Burch also raised hogs and chickens near her home until they were killed by Indians during the Seminole Wars in 1836. In 1884, James Gorman purchased land adjacent to present day Callaway Village from Capt. William Hinson for $1,000 (). Gorman began to develop what became known as "Gorman's Estate" which included a millrace that served as a water supply for his farm and other enterprises around Present Day Callaway Village; he also erected several frame buildings including a churches (First Methodist Church, then Baptist) and a school (John Fenton School). The first post office called "Calloway" opened on November 15, 1892 under the name "Natchez". At that time it was located on Walnut Street between Second Avenue South and Third Avenue South. On April 8 1907, the post office moved to its present location at 6th Street SW between Byron Road SW and Old World Road (). In 1916 David Ladd bought property adjoining Gorman's Estate; this land later became known as "Ladd's Estates". In 1924 Drue Davidson purchase 3 acres south of Ladd's Estates from Mr..
