Belle Glade, Florida is home to the first commercial coffee plantation in the United States. The Belle Glade Coffee Company was established in 1907 by Captain John S. Kapp and his wife Clara. At its peak, the Belle Glades Coffee Company had a production capacity of over 2,000 sacks of beans per day. In 1927, Captain Kapp donated land to the Belle Glade School District for use as their school bell-tower. The first public coffee cup was served at this location on October 18, 1927. The growth of Starbucks in Seattle and other coffeehouses throughout North America has led to a renewed interest in Belle Glade Coffee Company products and history. In 2012, the Belle Glade Historical Society erected a plaque at the company’s former production facility that reads: “This plot of land was donated by Captain John S Kapp to the Belle Glade School District in 1926 as part of their campaign to purchase property for use as their new school bell-tower. The first cup of sweet roasted coffee was served here on October 18th 1927″ In 2014, Starbucks announced they were opening up shop inside of an old mill located near downtown Belle Glade – making it one more stop for locals looking for some good java!

Belle Glade is located on U.S. Highway 1 about 25 miles (40 km) south of Jacksonville and 50 miles (80 km) north of Miami. Belle Glade was founded in 1892 by a group of settlers from Georgia who came down the Stono River to found what would become Belle Glade Township. The name "Belle Glade" originated with a girl named Belle who loved the beauty of the region and called her home "Gladesville". In 1906, a post office called Belle Glade was established, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1942. The first store in Belle Glade opened its doors on July 26, 1907. At that time, it was one of only two stores open in Monroe County during that time period The other store was operated by J C White & Sons which still stands today on US 1 near mile marker 168A as an antique furniture store known as "The Gilded Age Store". In 1961-1962, Belle Glade had its own school system with four schools: one for pre-kindergarten through ninth grade; one for tenth through twelfth grades; one for high school; and one college preparatory program which later became K–12 public schools There were also three churches: First Methodist Church (founded 1893), Baptist Church (1899), and Episcopal Church (1911). As part of its annexation into Port St Lucie-BelleGlade, Belle Glade also gained access to Allens Creek Lake which provided drinking water for 5 villages within its borders: Largo (north), Clearwater (east), Brooksville (south), Dunedin (west) and Publix Park (southwest). In addition, Belle Glade received access to all of Allens Creek's creekside land including Overlook Key which forms the southernmost extent of Allens Creek National Wildlife Refuge managed by United States Fish and Wildlife Service.
