Apopka, Florida is a small town in southcentral Florida. The population was 9,674 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Monroe County metropolitan area. The Apopka post office was established in 1884, and has been in operation since then. The name "Apopka" comes from the Seminole word "apo" meaning "a mouthful" or "a little place." Apopka's history begins with cattle drives that began in 1853 to provide food for settlers on the Indian Reserve near present-day Apopka. A store and hotel were built along US 1 in 1875, and a school was built in 1876. In 1903, Apopka became an incorporated municipality with a population of 2,075 people. In 1912 it annexed parts of Live Oak Township andlake Villa Township to form its new municipal limits; this annexation created a second municipality – Cocoa Beach – which still exists today as an unincorporated community within Monroe County proper. The first mayor of Apopka was G W H Holmes (1886-1901). Apopka has had several stores open for over 100 years including C & L Emporium (opened 1902), Mr Kippers Store (opened 1916), Mrs Pillsbury’s grocery store (opened 1924), Howard’s hardware store (opened 1932) and J F White Tire shop( opened 1940). Apopka, Florida is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach metropolitan area. The Apopka Post Office opened in 1892 and closed in 2003. The first settler in what would become Apopka was Wm. Fenton who arrived on horseback from Georgia on November 10, 1784. He built a cabin near the present day intersection of US 27 and SR 913 which he named "Fenton's Station". In 1894, Agrarian League member James White purchased 640 acre (258 ha) of land east of present day Apopka and founded White's Mills which became one of Apopka's most important economic engines during the early 20th century. By 1918 there were over 100 businesses located at White's Mills including a grocery store, five jewelers, four publishers, two bottling plants and several banks including First National Bank and Farmers Trust Company. In 1923 J C Stroud purchased 1/2 mile (0.6 km) north of present day Apopka from white for $1 million dollars becoming one of the largest landowners in central Florida until his death in 1984 when that portion of his estate passed to his son David Stroud Jr.. In 1929 John E Haggerty platted 3 townships within 2 miles (3 km) southeast of present day Apopka - Greenacres Township to the north, East Lake Township to the east and Wellston Township to the south - these townships would later be merged into Milton Borough as part of annexation by Miami-Dade County during 1960s planning efforts for southern Miami-Dade County as part of urban renewal initiatives called "Miltonization".
