Altamonte Springs, Florida is a municipally-controlled city in Hernando County, Florida, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Altamonte Springs area was first settled by English colonists in 1764 as "Altamont". The name comes from an Algonquian word meaning "place where the water flows slowly." In 1836, Daniel Webster recommended that Hernando County be divided into two districts to avoid duplication of resources and to improve transportation for settlers. District 2 included what is now Altamonte Springs and much of northeastern southwest Osceola County. On February 14, 1837, General John C. Frémont arrived in St Augustine with his forces and began construction on Fort Donelson on what is now US Highway 441 south of Altamonte Springs. For many years this was considered to be Jacksonville's original territorial capital; it eventually became Tampa Bay when Florida gained its statehood in 1959. In 1905, fire destroyed much of downtown St Petersburg when a paper mill caught on fire; the mill had been built near what is now Hollywood Boulevard and Central Avenue. The city quickly rebuilt and soon became one of America's leading industrial cities with mills such as DuPont yards located throughout central City Park (now Midtown). He renamed it Altamonte Springs after his home town ofario, Italy. In 1875, Orlando built a toll road from Altamonte Springs east to Sanford. It became known as the Turnpike of America and is still open today. In 1909, Altamonte Springs became one of two towns in Florida allowed to useelectricity for streetlights and lights were installed throughout the community. In 1925, Altamonte Springs Elementary School was opened with 12 students and four teachers. The school currently serves over 200 students grades pre-kindergarten through 8th grade along with a full range of extracurricular activities such as soccer, robotics clubs, dance groups etc..
