Altamonte Springs is a city in and the county seat of Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 188,949 at the 2010 census. The Altamonte Springs–Boca Raton Combined Statistical Area (CSA) had a total population of 476,994 as of 2018. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee-Sanford metropolitan area. The Altamonte Springs area was first settled by Volusia Indians in 1795. A small community developed around an Indian trading post on what is now Pineapple Rd., just east of US 1 and south of State Road 84. In 1828, the Federal government purchased 132 acres (56 hectares) in what is now AltamonteSprings from José María Pacheco and decided to name it Post Office Park after General James Kenedy who served as Commandant at Fort Brooke during the Seminole War. The U S Military built cottages near present day State Road 84 for officers and their families during World War II, but they all were destroyed by a fire about 1945 that burned for days throughout downtown Altamonte Springs In 1922, Orange County became territorial territory within Florida; this led to local governments being created which included Palm Beach County with its own county courthouse building on South Bay Drive in Coconut Creek In 1959, Boca Raton became separate from Palm Beach County and incorporated into its own municipality/county In 1963-1965 Live Oak Boulevard was extended from Sunrise Boulevard south to where it currently meets Interstate 95 just east of I-4 On November 2nd 1965 when Gadsden Parish absorbed most of Broward County including Plantation Key & parts of Coral Gables & Miami Beach annexed by Gadsden Parish; AltamonteSprings remained unincorporated
The Altamonte Springs, Florida community was founded in 1892 by settlers from the town of Daytona Beach, Florida. The community was named for General Andrew Jackson Altamont, who served as a colonel in the Union army during the American Civil War. The first post office was established in 1893 and the first store opened in 1895. The population of Altamonte Springs grew rapidly after World War I and began to develop into a small town. In 1925, Altamonte Springs incorporated as a city and growth slowed until the late 1990s when it resumed rapid growth. In 2006, Altamonte Springs became one of three communities within Orlando County that were merged into the city of Orlando.
