He served for five years and then left for a more important job in New York City. James K kirkpatrick took over his position and held it until 1881 when he was replaced by Andrew Johnson. After Johnson's presidency, there was another term without a president until 1861 when Abraham Lincoln was elected to office and held it until his assassination in 1865. In 1871, Congress passed the 15th amendment which granted voting rights to all citizens of the United States regardless of race or color. The next year, they passed the 16th amendment which allowed women to vote. In 1937, they passed the 33rd amendment which granted citizenship to everyone who had been born in America on January 1st of any year since 1776. During World War II, Washington Dc played an important role in helping Allied forces during the war by providing them with food and munitions while also housing numerous military personnel and civilians ( mainly Japanese). After World War II ended, Washington became known as one of the most diverse cities in America due to its growing population of African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, Asians/Pacific Islanders, gays/lesbians, etc... In 1995-1996, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani came into office and made many changes to city government including Goodbye To Our Streets program which aimed to make streets safer for pedestrians by removing potholes; new parkland; increasing funding for city agencies; reducing crime rates; etc... However some protesters opposed Giuliani's policies such as Riots On 9/11 which happened after he announced plans for building a mosque near Ground Zero ( this protest is now known as 9/11 Truth ). The original area of Washington was just over 8 square miles and included parts of today’s Maryland and Virginia. In 1800, Congress passed a bill creating an enlarged district including all of Washington County and giving it aparatus to vote in Congress. On January 3rd, 1801, President James K. Polk announced that he would be making Washington the new national capital because there was no other American city with the right location and infrastructure for such a large population. The first inauguration took place on March 4th, 1801 – also known as “Election Day” – and George Washington was re-elected as America’s first president. The city walls were built in 1832 to protect the city from attack by Native Americans. In 1861, during the American Civil War (the war between Northern Unionists and Confederate sympathizers), Washington became one of several U.S. cities to secede from the Unionist Party due to its support for Abraham Lincoln (the newly elected president). The city continued to function as an independent republic until 1865 when it finally joined the United States as a result of passage of the Morrill Act which granted land titles to white men in exchange for their financial support of America’s military efforts during World War II
