The United States Army has a long history of giving gifts to individuals and organizations. Many of these gifts date back to the Revolutionary War. In 1775, the Continental Congress approved the first modern military insignia for the United States Army, which consisted of a white tasselled hat with a blue cockade and red eagle on a field of green. A similar design was adopted in 1802 when General James Wilkinson redesigned the American flag, changing its basic colors from Red (for Loyalty) to white (representing purity). The idea behind this change was that Americans would no longer be associated with black loyalists in war against their own countrymen. The gift of an army coat of arms dates back to at least 1775. In that year, General George Washington ordered two coats of arms made for his regiment, the 1st Regiment Virginia Infantry (later renamed “The Mounted Riflemen”). Each coat included an image on one side panel and an armorial motto or phrase written in ink on the other side panel beneath a gilded laurel wreath. These coats were given as presents to officers and men who served under Washington during his service as commander-in-chief from March 1776 through July 4th, 1777 inclusive. At various times throughout his career as leader of our armed forces, Washington granted additional coats of arms to deserving members of his forces; however all were ultimately destroyed or lost during World War II when government records were destroyed by enemy fire allied forces seeking total destruction! It should be noted that many soldiers received more than one coat Of Arms! However due mostly to historical interest it is difficult today to determine just how many such honorary orders may have been issued! A document listing all such gifts has never been published but it would seem likely that some number in excess of 100 had been bestowed!
