National Guard gifts have been a part of the Wilmington community for over 60 years. The gift of military hardware and supplies to local families is an annual tradition in the city. In 1969, Delaware's National Guard was activated and tasked with providing support to local law enforcement. This led to the development of a national guard gift history in Wilmington. The first national guard gift was donated by Raytheon Company in 1969. At that time, Delaware's National Guard consisted of only 100 soldiers and support personnel from the cities of Dover, Lewes, Seaford and New Castle County. The National Guard is a unit of the United States Armed Forces composed of reservists who are called up for duty as needed. The Guard has been in existence since 1792, when the Continental Congress created an organization to support the defense of New York City. In 1964, the National Guard was made a full-time branch of the U.S. Army and in 1976 it became a part time branch of the U.S. Navy. The National Guard members serve without pay and are not subject to military discipline like regular soldiers or marines. The National Guard is responsible for providing law enforcement and security services within our borders, as well as disaster response and homeland defense purposes if required by state or local authorities. It also provides training for law enforcement officers across all states, offering classes on topics such as criminal justice, firearms handling, explosives detection/prevention, first responder skills and more. National Guardsmen have served in every conflict since America's inception and have played an important role in both World Wars I & II; Korean War; Viet Nam War; Desert Storm; Hurricane Katrina; Boston Tea Party; Waco Siege (1992); Ruby Ridge standoff (1996).
The Delaware National Guard was activated on October 1, 1941 and the first unit to be assigned was the 129th Infantry Regiment. The regiment served in World War II and the Korean War. Wilmington is a city in Delaware and the county seat of New Castle County. The population of Wilmington was 729,611 as of the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest city in Delaware and the second-largest in Pennsylvania. Wilmington was founded by English colonists in 1699 as a small fishing village on the Christina River. After a period of growth, it became an important port for goods shipped to Philadelphia and other points east during the 18th century. In 1814, the United States acquired title to what are now Delaware and New Castle Counties from Great Britain, making Wilmington its permanent home. By 1800, Wilmington had become an major commercial center with over 25 stores and warehouses handling goods from Easton to Trenton. The town grew rapidly during this period, becoming one of America's most populous cities by 1830. The following year saw another significant transformation as Wilmington became known as "the birth place of American democracy." In 1860, when Abraham Lincoln was elected president on a platform that included support for slavery, Wilmington did not votes for him but did send delegates to his inauguration. As part of its commitment to supporting civil rights movements throughout America, Mayor James Gilmore formed Citizens' Councils which recommended municipal policies that were enacted into law withoutCity Hall approval[1]. After years of growth and development including several natural disasters (including several hurricanes), World War II brought about intense growth due to military training facilities located nearby; however, much Wilkinson today remains tightly knit within its historic boundaries.[2] One example is Pembroke Dock Park - home to both branch libraries (one open 24/7) and large playgrounds adjacent to downtown - which is also still surrounded by warehouses dating back to pre-war days when warships were moored there for naval exercises[3]. While other parts have seen rapid gentrification (e.g., eastern Market Street has been redeveloped into an upscale shopping district), many older neighborhoods such as Old dock area remain magnets for local history buffs who love exploring centuries-old buildings along small streets lined with fine Portuguese Revival architecture.[4][5] Today's skyline offers beautiful views of both riverboats docked at Public Landing upstream from City Hall; as well as two massive new ultra high rise buildings completed just last year: One occupied by Experian Corporation Headquarters before they moved out in 2013;[6][7] while also hosting multiple restaurants stages nightly life activity at night featuring music venues,[8][9] art galleries,[10] movie theaters,[11],[12], dog parks,[13], blocks long artsy streets lined with flourishing businesses and lively nightlife scene all anchored around Public Landing where people come together every evening for spirited discussion about their day's events (Wilmington waterfront circa 1907) One thing that has not changed since then is the strong sense of community spirit found throughout Wilmington – something that helped make it one of America’s most walkable cities during its heyday before cars started taking over 50%of daily trips made within 5 miles (8 km)[14]. Despite some tough times recently – including theft rates up significantly across entire downtown area late last year – residents continue working hard despite occasional setbacks towards reaching their goals (e.g., increased traffic caused by renovations immediately surrounding Newark Liberty International Airport).[15],[16][17]). Some things haven't changed though: The prevalence of ethnic African Americans living near central business districts continues unabated; various music festivals happen throughout summer months; “Civic Night” each December celebrates diverse aspects Of Community Life Held Across All Ages & Geographies every month at various locations around town; young adults enjoy popular bars like Livewire Lounge [18]; venerable pubs like The Dolphin keep offering great beers even when Prohibition ended more than 50 years ago!
