The Marine Corps has a long and proud history in Wilmington, Delaware. From its beginning as Marines who served in the Continental Navy during the Revolutionary War to the present day, the Marines have always been an integral part of our community. In 1802, Wilmington was chartered as a town by Royal Charter from Great Britain. The first U.S. Marine detachment arrived in Wilmington on October 16, 1802 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Lovell. The Marines played a critical role in repelling British forces at Battle of Nanticoke River and Battle of Yorktown which helped secure independence for America. Today, Wilmington is home to more than 60 Marine battalions and detachments across the United States including Battalion Landing Team 5th Marine Regiment based here since 1978; 2nd Battalion 9th Marines (3rd Brigade) based here since 2006; 1st Battalion 3rd Marines (1st Brigade), also headquartered here since 2006; 3rd Marine Division Headquarters Unit - Force Reconnaissance Squadron Detachment 1 located here since 1984; 1st Fleet Air Arm Station Detachment 2 located here since 1992; 6 Wing/5 Group/4 Group Maritime Airlift Squadron Detachment 4 located here since 1991; 11 Wing/8 Group Naval Air Station Miramar-based Naval Auxiliary Air Service detachment attached to Headquarters USMC(I)since 1969). The total number of marines stationed within this city limits amounts to nearly 7000 service members! These men and women are committed to their country’s defense and enjoy many responsibilities both inside and outside their homes such as providing support for law enforcement activities as well as military operations around the world. They make up one third of all active duty military personnel in America! It is amazing that these same people are able to come together each month for Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at Fortress Hill Park followed by Silent Night Ball at 7:00pm where they exchange gifts with loved ones ashore or overseas!

Wilmington is a city in Delaware, United States. The population was 44,603 at the 2010 census. Wilmington has been called "the most historic city on the Delaware River" and "the commerce and culture capital of the Eastern Shore". The first European settlement in Wilmington was by French traders in 1624. In 1749, the British founded Fort Christina on an island in the Delaware River opposite Wilmington. The town grew rapidly after 1800 as shipping lanes opened up between New York City and Philadelphia. By 1871, Wilmington had become a port of call for immigrants coming to both Pennsylvania and Maryland aboard ships headed to those states. The riverfront became a popular tourist destination with hotels, casinos and other businesses sprouting up along its waterfront. In 1907, the city's business district was designated as the new downtown core around which all other areas would develop. This allowed larger companies to build Creamsations Building (now One Financial Place), Unilever House (now known as FirstMerit Bank) and Bethlehem Steel Company's Castlereagh Building (now known as PNC Plaza). Downtown also saw construction of such Notch-related landmarks as Market Square Shopping Center and Third Street Bridge. During World War II, many factories were built within or near downtown Wilmington including DuPont's munitions plant at Park Drive; North American Aviation's Malvern Arsenal; Bethlehem Steel Company's Northumberland Works; Carrier Corporation's Knowles Shipyard; National Broadcasting Corporation's WOR Radio Station WCKY-TV; Wernham Hogg Paper Mill; FCA Motorsports' race car factory at Dover Downs Speedway located just outside of town limits
