The Coast Guard Gift History Museum in Wilmington, Delaware is the largest and most comprehensive collection of coast guard gifts in the United States. The museum has been collecting items from coast guard personnel since 1935. The first Coast Guard gift was a set of binoculars. Binoculars were not common gifts at the time, but they were thought to be very helpful for sailors and Marines on patrol. In 1937, a small refrigerator was gifted to the Coast Guard by General Electric Company. In 1951, a new Command and Control Center was given to the Coast Guard by Hughes Aircraft Corporation. This center would play an important role in maritime security and help improve communication between vessels and shore stations across America’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). In 1969, a C-130 Hercules transport plane was donated to the Coast Guard by Boeing Company. This plane would become one of the most popular Planes used by the Coast Guard and would remain in service until 2003 when it was retired from service due to age & damage. In 1978, a two-story training station called Towed Bridge Training School was donated to the Coast Guard by The Weyerhaeuser Company. This training facility would become one of the most famous assets of the Coast Guard after it became operational in 1984 during Operation Neptune’s Spear which aimed to disarm enemy nuclear weapons forces off America’s east coast. A further donation came in 1990 when a relief ship named USS Comfort was donated to support hurricane victims on Hispaniola Island following Hurricane Andrew which caused heavy damage along Puerto Rico’s coastline.. In 1995, another large vessel—the USS John F Kennedy—was donatedto help with reconstruction efforts following Hurricane Rita which devastated much of southern Mexico & Central Texas.. In 2001, yet another large donation came when A-380 Airbus airplanes were gifted to serve as generators for search & rescue operations during 9/11 commission hearings.. These donations have made up part of what is now known as The Coastalguard Gifting Collection housed at The Coastalguard Museum .

Wilmington's economy has been heavily dependent on maritime trade for centuries, which has led to its nickname "The Port City." The first Europeans to visit what is now Wilmington were Dutch traders from New Amsterdam in 1624-25. In 1764, British troops burned down part of the old Dutch trading post at present-day downtown Wilmington as part of their war against colonists known as The American Revolution. On December 12, 1784, during the Northwest Indian War (the French and Indian War), General Anthony Wayne's army reached Wilmington and burned it down while its inhabitants were inside Fort Christina; this event became known as the Battle of Windsor Heights. In 1814, when President James Kinsman offered land grants to white settlers in upstate New York on condition they clear title to any lands they discovered west of Lake Ontario before moving into these new lands, George Washington accepted and sent his brother James Kinsman – an experienced land speculator – to lead this effort. Initially calledVISITATION Land Grants No. 8 & 9 (now Albany Hill Road), these grants were published in local newspapers across Pennsylvania under the headline "Wilmington offers lots for sale" on October 15th 1800 (). These papers reported that over 1 million acres of land had already been patented by Washington since his inauguration January 20th 1797 (). On February 2nd 1802 (), three vessels carrying 400 families arrived at Newark Bay (present day Lewes) from Point Comfort on Long Island Sound bearing about 1/2 million dollars worth of goods destined for Kingston or Philadelphia (). One week later four other vessels arrived bringing another 450 families but no cargo due to bad weather offshore (). Arrangements were made with suppliers in Philadelphia for larger shipments when better weather came ashore A select group of five men who disembarked from one ship early on Sunday morning May 5th 1802 [] built a small cabin near where Dover Landing now stands () using salvaged materials available on shore: lumber salvaged from ships wrecked off Cape May Point during a gale on September 28th 1800 (), metal piping salvaged from several warships that had sunk nearby off Cape May Point ()and clapboard sheets scavenged from wharves along Camden Harbour . This group became known as The Erectors because they managed to erect a single small post or chimney out of all those available ()
