Wilmington is a city in the U.S. state of Delaware and the capital of the Delaware Valley region. It is located on the Delmarva Peninsula, about 20 miles (32 km) south of Dover and 25 miles (40 km) north-northwest of Philadelphia. On December 15, 1776, George Washington arrived at Fort Christina to surrender control of Wilmington to British forces under General Howe – an event which is generally considered to be one of American history's most pivotal moments. For over two years following his capture, Washington was held prisoner at Fortress Cumberland before being transported back downriver to Fortress Cumberland again for trial before a military tribunal; this experience helped prepare him for leadership roles during Bunker Hill and Saratoga campaigns later in life. In 1814 Wilmington became part of Pennsylvania after New Jersey seceded from United States territory; however, because Wilmington lay within Pennsylvania's eastern borderlands - including Easton - it continued to be known as "the Garden City." In 1834 John Greenleaf Whittier came through town on his way from Baltimore to Lancaster; he noted that "Wilmington had not yet lost its olde worlde characteriks" despite having grown up near Philadelphia had changed much since he last visited twenty years earlier during his childhood days as a boy playing alongside local children outside their homes on Market Street NW corner Third Street".Whittier also wrote about how people hereabouts were still friendly despite their recent experiences with war: I have never seen so hearty or contented people anywhere else I have wandered among men... They seem almost glad that war has come upon us all; they are busy getting ready for some new game or other which they hope will keep them alive while hostilities lasts long enough for them to get good use out of their firearms... There seems no real animosity between classes or between different sections now... No great excitement prevails merely because there is active warfare going on around us... People hereabouts look forward eagerly with interest even unto death itself for tidings either good or bad relative thereto
