The Navy has a long and rich history in Delaware. The Naval Station of Dover was established in 1775 as the first naval station in America. The station was used for training and recruitment of sailors for the Continental Navy. In 1855, the Naval Station was moved to Wilmington and it served as the main naval facility for Delaware until 1956. The Naval Station currently houses the Military Sealift Command’s moorings at Quonset Point on Seaweed Island. In 2007, Dover became home to the USS John F Kennedy (CVN- 78) which replaced USS Enterprise (CVN- 6). The ship is named after President John F Kennedy and his mother, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. She is one of two warships permanently stationed at Dover alongside USS Constitution (WHEC-2). JFK is also known as "Dover's Flagship". USS Constitution's keel was laid down on September 19, 1907 by Bethlehem Steel Company in Quincy, Massachusetts; launched on November 2, 1909; sponsored by Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt; delivered to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on December 16, 1909; and placed into service with Destroyer Squadron 1 under Commander David Dixon Porter on February 8th 1910. Commissioned into service by Commodore James Halsey Jr., USNRF during World War I she helped support Allied operations off Normandy beaches before joining forces with USS Quincy (DE-1) to participate in Battle of Jutland August 31st 1916 As part of that engagement she incurred damage along with other ships when enemy shellfire ripped through her commanding officer's quarters wounding him mortally early morning hours July 20th 1917 accompanied by destroyers Quincy then Yorktown this action earned her nickname "Dover Beach" USS Constitution departed Norfolk Virginia port on October 3rd 1922 en route to join Task Force 506 Battle Group reported via Radio Liaison Officer Harry Padden Poston: "We sighted a large fleet anchored off Cap d'Angeau Roads looking like an American Fleet...the estimated number of ships were about 25000."
