Dover, Delaware is an unincorporated community in Kent County, Delaware, United States. The population was 1,947 at the 2010 census. Dover is located on the Delaware River and it is part of the Philadelphia–Camden metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Dover were Dutch colonists who landed in 1609. A fort was built by them in what is now downtown Dover and they named it "Nieuwoudamt". In 1614, English settlers arrived as part of a larger group led by Lieutenant Colonel John Smith. He named the settlement after his home town of New York City and donations from local residents helped finance his expedition across America. The English founded a small town here known as New Netherland on July 12, 1664. They quickly abandoned it due to Native American resistance and harsh conditions near the river's edge. In 1802, during the Harrison-Clintonadministration period of Ulysses S. Grant's presidency, Dover became part of the newly created U District of Philadelphia under Mayor James Buchanan. When Philadelphia's streetcar system began operations in 1868, streetcars ran through Dover directly to Camden Yards in Camden Township without stopping at any other stops or going through any other communities within Kent County until 1903 when they started traveling via Garden Street (now High Street) into Wilmington before terminating at Market Square next to City Hall where passengers could transfer to trains for further travel throughoutPhiladelphia or back home again).
