The Coast Guard in Dover, Delaware has been providing emergency service since 1790. The first Coast Guardsmen were stationed in Dover to protect the town during the Revolutionary War. The Coast Guard Station was first built on the current site of Dover High School in 1875. In 1924, a new station was built at present-day Marine Park and the Town of Dover became a part of the United States Coast Guard District 10. In 1978, when Delaware became an independent state, the Coast Guard Station in Dover was transferred to Delaware Service Command (DSC) as part of that state’s military defense establishment. Since then, DSC has continued to operate both stations as primary law enforcement and rescue units for coastal communities throughout Delaware. Today, there are nine Coast Guardsmen assigned to Coastal Defense Sector 3 headquartered at Marine Park in Dover which includes responsibility for patrols along the Delaware coastline from New Castle County southward to Cape May County and northward to Asbury Beach. Additionally members are maintained at three other locations within DSC: one located at Milford Haven; another located at Lewes; and a third stationed temporarily at Southern State College near Elizabeth City after being moved from Wilmington following Hurricane Isabel. These personnel provide support for an operations center employed by DSC which houses all communication systems including radar, sonar and fiber optics technology used during emergencies as well as command posts for marine search and rescue efforts should they be required anywhere along the coasts of southeastern Pennsylvania and northwestern Maryland In addition to their law enforcement responsibilities, members of the Coast Guard also serve aboard vessels conducting search and rescues in times of danger or distress such as those experienced after Boxing Day 2017 when more than 50 people lost their lives while trying to save passengers on a sunken boat off North Carolina's Outer Banks. Furthermore they offer visitor education programs on local maritime history while afloat or ashore through Friends Sailors Club program aboard two coast guard boats moored off Headlands Marina near Georgetown shoreline every month during Seasonal Ferry Operation Hours
