West Haven, Connecticut is a town located in the heart of the New England states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The population was 15,858 at the 2010 census. It is one of the oldest towns in New England and home to some of the most interesting maritime history in all of America. The town began as a small fishing village on Narragansett Bay. By 1800, however, West Haven had become an important seaport for commerce and shipping presence in southeastern Connecticut. In 1825, John James Audubon visited West Haven and described it as “the most perfect harbour I ever saw” due to its clean water and well-protected shorelines against storm surge. In 1892, when King George V awarded America’s first Nobel Prize in physics to Danish scientist Niels Bohr, he donated $5,000 to help build a lighthouse at West Haven onshore. The lighthouse was completed in 1893 by architects Alfred Bulfinch and Edward Burnham and became one of the earliest automated lights on Long Island Sound. Today, West Haven continues to be an important harbor for commerce with its many businesses including several ports that handle container shipping containers as well as general cargo ships such as General Electric Company shipyards which are home to some of the largest facilities for manufacturing steel products in North America. Additionally,West Haven boastes two professional sports teams – the Patriots football team from Foxboro MA (northwest quarter),and also has minor league baseball (the East Hartford Tigers) affiliate with THE NEW YERKES OF LONG ISLAND (TNT).

West Haven is named after a large salt marsh on the south side of the River Thames. The first Europeans to visit what is now West Haven were Dutch sailors who anchored off the coast in 1624 and again in 1628. They named it "Wethersfield" after one of their farmsteads in New Netherland. By 1639, Englishman Robert Latham had settled there and started a saltworks on an estuary of the river that he called "Latham's Harbour". In 1701, John Winthrop founded West Haven as a small village near his original home at Saybrook because he wanted to create a community where people could trade with each other and explore new land beyond Long Island Sound. In 1795, Congress passed an act establishing Yale University which moved from Easton and became one of America's most prestigious universities. Yale College opened in 1811 on land donated by Reverend James Cushing as part of efforts by Congregationalists to build churches near Yale University so that students could have access to religious education without leaving their homes.
