When the first coffee beans were grown in the town of West Haven, Connecticut in 1795, it was a small and isolated community. Today, the town is home to over 82 businesses that produce artisan coffee. The history of artisan coffee starts with two men- Moses Brown and Nicholas Fenton- who founded a small business called Naugatuck Coffee on Route 203 in 1802. The business became successful enough to sell beans out of their house until they moved to their current location on Broad Street in 1903. Over time, other small businesses cropped up all around town, but it was Naugatuck Coffee that truly began the coffee revolution in West Haven. The first espresso machine was invented by Luigi Batali at his Batali & Sons Italian Restaurant in 1958. In 1984, Harry Nygren opened Nygren's Coffee House which became one of the earliest Starbucks locations. Since then, many other restaurateurs have followed suit andWest Haven has become one of the most prolific coffee towns in America. Thanks to its rich history and countless businesses that produce amazing artisan coffee, West Haven is now home to some of America’s best cupcakes and donuts as well as some top-notch cafes and restaurants.
A few years ago, I started my own small business making artisan coffee. At first it was something I did on the side to support myself and my family, but over time it has become a full-time career. The first coffee shop in West Haven, Connecticut was opened by two men named John and Nathaniel Green in 1827. The Green Coffee Shop was located on Main Street in the town center and was open to the public. In 1830, the Green Coffee House moved to a more remote location on Elm Street in the town limits. In 1832, Nathanial Green died and his son John took over operations of the business. The store continued to be run by John until his death in 1839. His widow continued to operate the business until it closed its doors for good in 1865.
West Haven is a city in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 45,482 at the 2010 census. West Haven is the largest municipality in Hartford County and part of the Greater Hartford metropolitan area. The town was chartered on October 24, 1764 by commissioners from Saybrook, netherland and Newtown. The town was named for Sir George Washington's home in Virginia. It was platted in 1767 and again on November 3 of that year by Captain John Winthrop with land donated by Peter Wentworth. The first post office opened in 1768 and operated until 1821. In 1824, West Haven became a part ofHartford Township; it remained an incorporated village until 1959 when it became a city under its own charter.. West Haven has been nicknamed "the peach capital of Connecticut". The fruit industry has been strong here since the early 19th century as farmers grew peaches for trade and marketing purposes as well as to make preserves and pies.. Some of the first artisan coffee roasters in the United States were founded in 1892 by Davidoff and Sons in New York City. The company was later renamed Davidoff Coffee Company. In 1922, J.B. Pembroke & Sons established a roastery in Cambridge, Massachusetts. That same year, Dutch coffee producer Krombacher took over the business of Davidoff Coffee Company and changed their name to Anchor Bay Coffee Co.. In 1951, Peet's Coffee bought Anchor Bay Coffee Co., creating Peet's Anchor Bay Corporation. Peet's continued to produce artisan coffee until 1984 when they merged with Nestle Purina Semiconductors USA Incorporated to form Nestle Purina North America Incorporated.
West Haven was founded in 1635 by Increase Mather and became a part of the Connecticut Colony in 1664. The town was named for West Haven, England, where Mather had been born in 1588. In 1814, the town acquired its current name and boundaries. At various times West Haven served as a stop on the Underground Railroad, and it is known for its mills that produced flour, paper, and other products. Today West Haven is a bedroom community with a population of about 35,000 people.
West Haven was first settled in 1663 by Puritans. It became a town in 1784 and was incorporated as a city in 1831. The city is the county seat of Hartford County. West Haven is home to the Yale University School of Medicine, one of the world's leading medical schools.
