The Connecticut Army National Guard's (CAG) history dates back to 1792 when the first unit was organized in West Haven. The CAG is one of the oldest and most veteran military organizations in the United States. Today, the CAG operates over 120 units across Connecticut, including 9 brigades and 10 wings. The CAG traces its origins to the state's first militia units, which were raised during the American Revolution as part of a campaign to secure independence from Great Britain. Militia units played an important role in boththe Patriots' war effort and the postwar Reconstruction period. In 1814, Congress passed an act authorizing the formation of a regiment of artillery for West Haven residents to support local militias in case of war with France. That same year, Captain Samuel Morse founded The Patriot newspaper in West Haven and began publishing articles on national security issues. In 1825, Colonel Nathanael Greene formed a brigade of cavalry under his command to support General John Sullivan's army defending New York City during the War for Independence. From 1826 until 1827, Colonel David Hale led a brigade composed mostly of Congregationalists into battle against Federal troops at Long Island Sound. In 1830-31, Colonel James Paine commanded an infantry battalion that participated in operations along the Danbury River against Native Americans near Uncasville. In 1832-33, Captain Ezra Stiles organizeda company from west Hartford into what would become The Connecticut Volunteers (CTV). A year later, Captain Stiles became colonel commanding CTV 1st Brigade; this brigade fought at Saratoga as part of Major General Jonathan Wayne's Third Corps under Lt.-Gen George Biddle Huntress and Brigadier General Israel Putnam Howe Jr.'s divisional staff corps during that campaign's opening days before being disbanded after suffering heavy losses at Saratoga Bridgehead. The disbanding of these armies marked a watershed event in military history; it was the first time that an entire country had ever abandoned its armed forces for ideological reasons. Army gift history begins with Napoleonic Wars Napoleon Bonaparte was a powerful French general who led his troops to victory over Austria at Austerlitz in 1813. This event ushered in a new era for European warfare, as Napoleon quickly developed an empire across much of continental Europe. These acquisitions created a surplus of weapons that he could sell to other countries on terms that satisfied both himself and his generals. By 1798, Napoleon had become so powerful that he needed only 10 percent of all revenue from taxes to pay for his own defense; this allowed him to suppress popular revolts and continue conquests without fear of invasion or rebellion from within his own government. As Napoleon continued expanding his empire into new territory, he became more reliant on mercenaries as well as foreign volunteers for fighting against indigenous enemies (such as the Swiss Confederation). In 1809-1810, France suffered another crushing defeat at War Minister Ney's hands; this debacle underscored how vulnerable French troops were when besieged inside their own borders. To make matters worse, revolutionary forces had infiltrated French Armies during this time period and began organizing themselves into guerrilla bands called "the Insurrectionists." These bands posed a serious threat not only to Napoleon but also to France's political stability; if they could be stopped or crushed(), France would be unable to expand its influence further east or westward without assistance from abroad. Withdrawing allFrench troops from Switzerland precipitated another arms embargo by Britain following Napoleonic victories at Marengo and Augereau; this event helped promptause American involvement in European affairs during the early part of the 19th century. At this point in history, it was clear that Europeans were no longer able to rely solely on native forces for battlefield success; instead they needed help from outside sources such as foreigners who could provide them with materiel, training camp facilities, and leadership experience

However, during the 21st century, Westhaven has seen some growth with new development being approved and construction starting on several projects such as a new library and stadium
The town of West Haven was founded in 1701 by Captain Samuel Prescott. The area was part of the Pequot nation prior to Connecticut's Confederation and it remained so until 1824. It became a town on April 14, 1781, when Congress created it from parts of the towns of East Haven and New Haven. The original inhabitants were Quakers. In 1814, the town voted to become an incorporated village and it did so on October 15, 1824.
