Over the years, the Navy has given many gifts to Waterbury residents. One of the most memorable tragedies in town’s history was when USS Constitution lost her battle with HMS Guerriero off Haiti on December 17, 1807. Petrie gifted the USS Constitution Museum to Waterbury after she Museum closed in Greenwich, Connecticut. Each year since then, the city has hosted an Independence Day parade that coincides with the Naval Review at Fort Moultrie Park in downtown Waterbury. In 1978, Mayor John Connolly presented Rear Admiral James Doolittle with a USS Saratoga Museum Gift Certificate for his home in Norwalk, Connecticut after she was decommissioned at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Since then many other members of congress have also been given gift certificates or medals from the Navy for their homes in Connecticut including Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.). The first cruise missile launched by navy ships was a model built by Boeing called “Model 300” on July 15th 1957 aboard USS Enterprise along side USS Lexington SSN 592 which had just been delivered from Newport News Shipbuilding Corp., Newport News Virginia under Maritime Commission contract (#MC hull number KV-2). On this launch there were three missiles each carrying 1 pound warhead launching from one Mk 54 torpedo tube located aft single head room forward superstructure against Mare Island Class destroyers operating out of San Francisco Bay Area anti Submarine Warfare Station during early 1960s when Trident submarines began roaming these waters nuclear powered subs based out of Faslane Scotland Yard UK nuclear reactor Atollaground Gull Rock AB close to Tarawa Atoll AFB US Northern Mariana Islands Okinawa 3 days before detonation! This unique event took place during Joint Chiefs Meeting at Camp David US President Harry S Truman .
