Waterbury is a town in Oxford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 31,183 at the 2010 census. Waterbury's history dates back to 1664 when it was part of the Narragansett Indian Nation. It became a town on April 20, 1824 and was named for Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. In 1881, the town consolidated with other towns inOxford County to form the present-day town of Waterbury. Today Waterbury's coffee industry is one of its most important economic sectors and its coffee shops are some of the most well-known and popular in New England. The city has also been home to several large coffee roasters including Peet's Coffee Company and Starbucks. Waterbury is known for its highly processed but high quality coffee beans which are exported all over the world. In 1846, Abraham Lincoln visited Waterbury while on his way to New York City and purchased two bags of coffee from The Coffee House owner John Hickey. He later used these beans at his White House Correspondents' Association dinner as part of his speechifying style. From this point forward, Waterbury became associated with both politics and coffee due to Lincoln's visits. In 1897, another prominent Coffee Shop opened up in downtown Waterbury named The Starrett café after local businessman Alfred Starrett Jr.. This business served as a hub for social activity for many years before being closed down in the late 1980s due to financial problems. Waterbury is a borough in the state of Connecticut, located in the eastern half of the state. As of the 2010 census, Waterbury had a population of 34,611. The name Waterbury derives from the Wethersfield River that flows through it and its surrounding towns. The town was founded by Joshua Tuttle in 1781 as part of an effort to grow Bethlehem into a major commercial center. It became an incorporated municipality on February 14, 1836, and adopted its current name on October 15, 1887. The first store in town opened in 1781 and was called "the Tuttle Store". During World War II, many factories were built here including Humble Rubber Company (now Goodyear), Hartford Electric Company (now Progress Energy), United Automobile Association (UAAA) factory #1 and United Automobile Association (UAAA) factory #2 which are now both preserved as part of Waterbury Historical Museum. Waterbury's economy changed dramatically after World War II when heavy industry left for greener pastures elsewhere. However, since then there have been several attempts by the city to reintroduce some form of heavy industry back into its economy with mixed results. In recent years there has been talk about resurrecting a water authority which would provide essential services like wastewater treatment and public safety without reliance on private enterprise
Waterbury was founded in 1764 by Increase Mather and John Wayland as a small trading post on the Androscoggin River. The town grew rapidly, becoming an important commercial center in the region. In 1812, Waterbury became the capital of Connecticut when Hartford was destroyed by fire. The city experienced rapid growth during its early years, with several large industrial estates being erected along the river. However, due to heavy competition from larger towns throughout Connecticut, Waterbury eventually fell behind in economic development. It regained its prominence as a regional center after it became the seat of government for part of southern New England in 1835.During World War II, Waterbury played an important role as a major munitions plant and storage depot in southeastern Connecticut. After the war, the town began to experience significant declines in population and economic status; however, it has since begun to regain some of its former prosperity.
