The Torrington Coast Guard Station has been providing service to the community since 1878. The Station was first established as a small watercraft detachment, and then became a full-time coast guard station in 1912. Today, the Coast Guard Station provides services to the residents of Torrington, including search and rescue, law enforcement, and public safety. The Station is also home to the Torrington Maritime Museum which offers exhibits on maritime history and customs.

The Torrington Coast Guard Museum is one of the oldest and largest maritime museums in the United States. How did Torrington get its name? Torrington started as a small, rural community in southeastern Connecticut. It was named after the town of Torrington in Warwickshire, England. The original settlers were farmers who arrived in the area around 1785. By 1820, Torrington had a population of 100 people and it became an incorporated town. The first post office was established in 1824. In 1830, the first natural gas pipeline was built through Torrington and it created a boom for the town. The growth of the industry led to increased development and rapid population growth. After World War II, Torrington experienced significant economic decline and declined social status within Connecticut society. However, over time it has regained some of its former glory as an agricultural center with many businesses operating in the town now.
The Coast Guard has been providing emergency service and interdiction for over 100 years. In 1934, the Coast Guard was created as a separate agency within the Department of Commerce. The first coast guard gift was a steamship propeller from New York City. The Coast Guard's first official gift was an American flag pole from Philadelphia. In 1961, the Coast Guard took over operation of the Cutter Service which had been in operation since 1794. At that time, the cutter service offered only sailing vessels to provide emergency services during weather conditions such as hurricanes or storm surges. However, in 1991, the cutter service merged with other agencies to form the current coast guard organization. Since then, the coast guard has given many gifts including patrol boats, helicopters and even submarines! Some of the most memorable gifts have included: a life buoy (the first), an MH-60 Seahawk helicopter (the first OH-6A Sea Hawk helicopter), a P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft (the first advanced coastal search and rescue aircraft), a C-130 Hercules transport plane (the first jet airlift arrived on Earth), and even a set of stairs for use as an observation platform on board military ships! It is clear that the Coast Guard loves giving things away!
