The Connecticut Naval Militia was established in 1812 as the Stamford Volunteer Fire Department. The first naval vessel to be assigned to the militia, USS Constitution (1814), also served as a training base and its crew became familiar with navy procedures and doctrines. In 1835, the navy purchased USS Constitution IX from the Union Navy for $5,000. As part of its inscription on the statehouse wall, it is noted that “the Connecticut Naval Militia has always been an active and effective defender of our state’s interests”. In 1916, when America entered World War I, the navy mobilized in support of France. USS Quincy (CA-8) arrived in New Haven Harbor on October 9th; she had borne American forces ashore at Cherbourg two days earlier while HMS Sandwich sailed nearby towing transports carrying supplies and troops. On October 11th, President Woodrow Wilson issued Executive Order 6102 which called for all Americans who could wear uniforms to contribute their services to what would become known as “The Great War”. On November 5th 1917 USS Quincy departed New Haven Harbor en route for trials off Cuba; she was decommissioned on December 10th after hitting a mine off Key West Beach while underway for her maiden voyage. She was eventually scrapped at Astoria Marine Base in Maine along with other warships taken down during World War II. It is interesting to note that only one navy ship ever served consecutively with both the United States Navy and the Connecticut Naval Militia: USS Constitution IX (1835-1916). This unique occurrence indicates not only how closely allied nations were related by maritime law but also how important naval militias were within each country during wartime – serving simultaneously multiple masters ensured efficient coordination between command structures essential for success against common adversaries such as Russia and Austria-Hungary respectively.

Stamford was first settled by the Pequot people in 1634. The town was named for Stamford, Connecticut, a small village in England that had been abandoned when its inhabitants were forced to leave during the English Civil War. The first buildings in Stamford were built by Puritan settlers who arrived from Great Britain in 1636. The town remained a small community until it became an incorporated city on November 3, 1814. During the American Revolutionary War, Stamford sided with the British and was destroyed by Patriot forces. After the war, Stamford grew rapidly and became one of the most important towns in New England. In 1851, the city annexed adjacent villages of Brookline and North Attleboro. In 1907, Stamford merged with Hartford to form what is now called Hartford-Stamford-Hartford City.
