Stephensons were one of the earliest settlers in Stamford, Connecticut. The first family to arrive was John Stephenson, who arrived in 1636. By 1639, there were twelve Stephenson families in Stamford. The town was originally named North Stonington after Northampton, England. North Stonington was renamed Stamford because it was on the main road from New Haven to Hartford. In 1701, Stamford became part of what is now Hartford County and the name changed back to North Stonington. The townsfolk of Stamford fought a pitched battle with the Indians in 1714 in order to keep them out of their town center. The Battle of Stamford Bridge took place on October 11th that year and saw some very brave individuals fight for their homes against an overwhelming force of Indian warriors led by Chief Philip Westfall. It is said that only 7 people were killed and more than 20 were taken prisoner which helped increase commercial trade within the community and give it a boost financially. In 1747, Stephenson’s great-grandson John Stephenson donated land for what is now Eastman School District which opened its doors on July 1st, 1868. In 1877, Major General James Kieft organized a military expedition into Canada known as the Northwest Expedition under orders from President Ulysses S Grant and Colonel Augustus Ewing to explore new lands east of Lake Ontario beyond those reached by previous expeditions including Captain Cook’s HMS Endeavour two years earlier. Upon reaching civilization they discovered much valuable furbearing wildlife but also encountered many hostile natives who attacked them resulting in 3 deaths (the last being killed when his force withdrew through a swamp). This event has been called “The Day Of The Outcast” due to its strategic importance at the time as it demonstrated American military might without drawing attention away from America’s ongoing war with Great Britain at home; this episode forever changed Canada and made Canadienism another popular national movement throughout much of 19th century America On September 9th 1861, during America's Civil War era – just four days after Abraham Lincoln had been elected president – members of Congress passed act 1208 entitled "An Act For Suppressing Rebellion". This legislation authorizes martial law in Connecticut until satisfactory assurances can be made that all men are loyal subject to law and government regulations This effectively created a form of apartheid where white men could not vote or own property while black men were limited access only to low paying jobs outside the home making it difficult for them socially as well as economically

In 1818 Stamford became the first city in New England to be chartered. It experienced rapid growth during the 19th century as waves of immigrants arrived from Europe, and in 1892 it adopted its current name of Stamford. The city has since become an important cultural and economic center for northeastern Connecticut.
