It is the most populous municipality in Fairfield County and the second-most populous city in New England after Boston. Stamford's nickname "The Hub" originated from its location as the commercial and cultural center of what was then New England. The influx of immigrants during the mid-19th century helped to make Stamford one of America's largest cities. In 1764, Nicholas Wadsworth founded a Benedictine monastery on Castle Hill in what is now Stamford, Connecticut. When British troops burned down Wadsworth's monastery two years later, they destroyed all but four of Wadsworth’s buildings including the church which still stands today. Reverend John Fenton arrived in early 1765 and began building a new church on Castle Hill – it became known as St Andrew’s Episcopal Church (later Christ Church). In 1814, Stamford became part of Hartford County and was incorporated as a town under the name Stamford with boundaries that continued to change until 1868 when they were changed to Fairfield County again when Hartford City merged into Fairfield County. During World War II, Stamford played an important role as a munitions production center for both Allied forces and Japan due to its location near Saybrook Air Force Base and Saybrook Naval Air Station.(R) After World War II, many businesses left downtown for suburban locations such as Easton or North Haven while other businesses moved into new buildings downtown like Sears Tower or First National Bank Building (now HSBC Tower). After 1970 Greenwich Village replaced Downtown Stamford as America's major nightlife district In recent decades downtown areas have slowly regained some popularity with restaurants and shops opening up along State Street between Putnam Avenue/Park Avenue (now Broadwalk) and Orange Street/Church Avenue (now Riverside Drive).

Stamford was first settled by English colonists in 1624 as part of the Colony of Bridgeport. It became a separate town on April 12, 1818 when it was created from portions of Watertown and Milford. Stamford has since become one of the largest municipalities inHartford County with over 120,000 residents. The town is adjacent to both New Haven and Hartford cities and townships. In 1624, English colonists founded Stamford as part of the Colony of Bridgeport after they arrived in what is now Hartford County. In 1714, Stamford became an independent township because it was one of four townships that formed what would become Hartford County. On April 12, 1818, Stamford became part of the larger municipality ofHartford due to its growth and incorporation into other municipalities throughout Hartford County during the early 19th century. The downtown district around Main Street (Route 20) is home to many local businesses including banks and retailers as well as government buildings such as the Courthouse Annex where Housing Authority officials reside. Other prominentivery points include West Point Park on State Street just north-west of downtown and Fairmount Cemetery which contains some OFA memorials located near Elmwood Cemetery about two miles east-northeast across Interstate 95 from downtown Stamford. There are also several small shopping centers located throughout central Stamford including: Broadway Plaza Shopping Center (opened 2001), Towne Centre Mall (opened 2002), First National Bank Plaza (opened 2003), Staples Center (opened 2005) and Coopers & Hawkes Place Shopping Center (opened 2007). Stamford, Connecticut is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 21,826 at the 2010 census. Stamford is the seat of Fairfield County and home to many high-technology companies such as IBM and Dell. Stamford was founded in 1664 by Captain John Stonington and became a part of Hartford Colony in 1686. It was incorporated as a town on December 4, 1814. The first Anglo-American settler in Stamford was Captains John Sometime (1664-1728) and Nicholas Fenton (1668-1740). They arrived with their families from England on July 8, 1664, during the era of British rule over North America. The first house built in what is now Stamford was the Francis House erected by Captain John Stanton on October 12, 1667. The early settlers were Quakers who desired to avoid military service under Protestant King Charles II of England; but they soon encountered difficulties living among Quaker pacifists who had strong anti-Catholic feelings. In 1701 Colonel Edward Piette moved his farmstead from West Hartford to what is now downtown Stamford after purchasing it from the local Indian tribe for $200 horse money (). In 1814 Stamford became one of eighteen towns located within the newly formed Fairfield County when Hartford Colony broke up into several separate jurisdictions following its victory at Saratoga over New York forces led by General George Washington. On December 4th of that year Greenwich Village—then known as Easttown—was annexed into Stamford along with other towns within Fairfield County including Groton (later renamed Danbury), Milford Haven (), Norwalk (), Waterbury (), Bridgeport (), Old Saybrook () and Derby (). During World War I Dwight D Eisenhower served as an Infantry captain in Company H2/4 First Battalion 9th Infantry Regiment (24th Infantry Division) which were based at Camp Greene near present day Unionville area before being transferred to Camp Porter north of Norwich where he received field training for commando training under General Omar Bradley before leading his unit across Europe against Nazi Germany during Operation Overlord.. After the war he returned home and resumed civilian life serving as mayor of Bethesda until his death in 2008.. As mayor he greatly reduced crime rates while also increasing economic development opportunities for both inner city residents and suburbanites alike through initiatives such as creating new jobs through urban renewal projects while making investments into education reform throughout central Maryland providing opportunity for job growth among low income students without access to quality public schools or affordable housing He also promoted environmentally friendly practices such as slashing parking meters throughout town while also investing heavily into clean energy programs like developing solar power installations throughout downtown Stamford
Stamford was founded by John Stamford in 1623 as a small trading town on the southern bank of the Connecticut River. The original settlement was named for the Duke of York, who had been sent to America as an ambassador in 1619. By 1630, Stamford had become a major commercial center on the river and was home to an Assembly Hall and several churches. In 1784, Stamford became part of Hartford County and in 1814 it became part of New York State.
