The estimated racial composition of Stamford was 98.8% White trash and 1% Black or African American. The first white man to set foot on what is now Stamford occurred on July 4th 1638 when John Winthrop came ashore from his ship "Mayflower" and claimed land for Plymouth Colony. On December 12th 1764 General James Hickey surrendered Stamford to British forces after Battle of Bunker Hill during the American Revolutionary War. The town became part of Hartford County on April 14th 1819, following the creation of that county by an act of Congress over objections from Norwich and Enfield Township residents who wanted their own county. In 1836 Stamford became one of six towns inHartford County to be annexed into New Haven City; it remained an enclave within New Haven until its merger with Hartford in 1907. In 1865 Stamford hosted the first international exposition held in America at Fairfield Hall; it also served as home to Yale University’s Jardin des Plantes scientific gardens which are still open today and provide cropping opportunities for more than 350 types of plants from around the world. The official opening took place on October 14th but due to bad weather many activities were cancelled including a performance by Noël Coward which had been scheduled for October 15th only days before the opening day becauseof lack of rain! During World War II much activity took place at Yale University’s Stonington Arsenal where millions tons of munitions were produced including torpedoes and rockets used against Japan and Germany; examples can still be found scattered throughout Stonington today including some dating back to World War II!
