The first Europeans to visit Shelton were traders and pilgrims on their way to Mecca in 1524. They named it "Shelton" for one of these men: John Shelton (died c. 1558). A grant from King George III in 1795 allowed people of English descent to settle here permanently. The first house built in Shelton was a small frame structure on Main Street that burned down in 1807. A new frame building was erected on this site in 1818 and served as the town's courthouse until 1868 when it was replaced by the present courthouse building on Park Avenue. In 1915, local businessman Franklin D'Angelo donated land for what would become Fairfield University; Fairfield became an independent university and Shelton became its main campus. In 1938, Shelton annexed the neighboring town of Ridgefield; Ridgefield had been a farming community with few industry options until it developed into a suburban center following World War II as baby boomers moved into larger cities looking for cheaper housing than they could find back home.
