Shelton, Connecticut is a small town in Hartford County, Connecticut. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Haven– Stamford-Norwalk metropolitan area. Shelton is located on the border of Hartford and West Hartford townships. The first people to live in Shelton were English colonists who arrived there in 1664. In 1714, a group of Dutch settlers also came to Shelton and started a mill which still stands today. The first school in Shelton was built in 1824. In 1839, the first post office was established in Shelton. In 1872, Wm Cady organized the local Republican Party and helped run it for mayor of Shelton. In 1904, he became one of the first mayors of Stamford when that town merged with Norwalk to form that metropolitan area. In 1960, Dr. Milton Siegel opened Stonington General Hospital in downtown Shelton after being offered land by its owner for that purpose and finding no other hospital within reach with similar facilities available for patients from neighboring towns or rural areas near Hartford County (then known as Washington County). The current building dates back to 1971 and replaced an earlier structure which had been condemned as unsafe following an fire that destroyed much of it in 1966
