Shilton is a town in east-central Connecticut. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Haven–Milford–Anchor city area. The town was first settled in 1635 and was chartered in 1644 as Shelton by John Davenport, 1st Baron Davenport. The name comes from the ancient Saxon word "shelten" meaning "to build." Shilton is located on the southern border of Hartford County and lies south of Bridgeport to the north and West Haven to the east. It consists of two villages: Northfield and Southfield. Northfield is home to most of Shilton's commercial activity with its six businesses including an ice cream parlor, four convenience stores, two banks, a post office, a pet store, three restaurants (two Italian and one Chinese), several small shops and a hair salon. Southfield is more rural with a few residences dating back to before 1792 but most development took place after that date in both villages with some new housing being built on properties acquired since then such as Shilton Middle School which opened in 1986 and Memorial Park which includes an event center/conference center/theater complex/. There are also several churches within Shilton including Our Lady of Lourdes Church (founded 1853) which sits near where Interstate 95 meets Route 9; St. John's Evangelist Episcopal Church (founded 1865) off Route 9 just outside Northfield; Trinity United Methodist Church (& First Unitarian Universalist Congregation Of America) (founded 1903); Holy Cross Catholic Apostolic Parish & Anglican Parish Center(opened 1984). According to the United States Census Bureau, Shelton has a total area of , all land. As of the census[10]of 2010, there were 7,569 people,[11] 598 households,[12] 256 families residing in the town.[13] The population density was 1,521.[14][15][16] There were 681 housing units at an average density of 622 per square mile (221/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97% White,[17] 2% African American,[18] 0% Native American,[19] 2% Asian Pacific Islander[20][21][22], 1% from other races,[23][24][25], 0% from two or more races[26]; 3% from Hispanic or Latino origin; 0% from five or more races; and 2%.

Shelton, Connecticut is a small town in southern Connecticut. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the London- Norwich- Bridgeport, CT metropolitan statistical area. The town has a rich history dating back to the 17th century when it was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. In 1818, Shelton became a part of the United States and was named for General James Shelby (1768-1828), who fought in the War of 1812. The first white settler in Shelton was John Atherton in 1692. Atherton had come from England with his family and landed on Long Island Sound near what is now Sayville. He built a cabin on an island in South Lake Union and started trading goods with Native Americans. Over time, other Englishmen followed Atherton's lead and began to settle in Shelton. By 1800, there were about 20 people living in ShelTON including some farmers, craftsmen, mechanics and seamen who traded with Indians as well as Europeans for items such as cornmeal and cloth. In 1818, when Great Britain ceded controlover New Netherland to the United States following its victory over France at Yorktown, ShelTON became one of nine towns within newly organized America west of Philadelphia that received land grants from President James Kappeldorffer (1781-1846). The grantees chose to name their towns after American Revolutionary War generals or leaders rather than geographical features like mountains or rivers because they felt these names would be associated more favorably with their hometowns in America than any sites located west of Philadelphia which included Albany (New York), Princeton (New Jersey), Boston ( Massachusetts) and Philadelphia ( Pennsylvania). The town’s first store opened its doors on December 12th 1822 just east of present day Main Street where it still stands today under new ownership since 2017! This establishment served as both a post office and bookstore until 1865 when it closed due to lack patronage; however evidence suggests that early patrons likely browsed through local paperbacks during long winter evenings while sitting around warm fires outside! On July 4th 1830 – six years after incorporation – citizens voted by referendum to end slavery within their community thereby becoming one race free nation! This momentous event marked an important milestone for not only ShelTON but all similar abolitionist communities across America - proof that openmindedness & democracy were key ingredients necessary for creating & maintaining righteousness & order! It wasn’t until 1861 that Sharpless Hardware replaced this pioneer hardware store which closed due to “the great depression” but reopened again later that year under new management as Main Street Hardware Co., Ltd.; incidentally becoming one of only twoHardware stores operating continuously throughout prohibition era Boston (& RI) From 1921 thru 1933 main street operated Asbestos Supply CO until merger into Sears Roebuck & Co.; ultimately becoming Sears Holdings Incorporated
