The name Shelton comes from Samuel Shelton who settled in what is now the town in 1768. The first post office opened in 1814 and was called Westfield. The first store was built in 1847 and became known as the Merchants Store. In 1872, a new store was built on Main Street and it became known as the General Store. In 1907, a new school was built on School Street and it became known as Shelton High School. In 1912, a new water tower was built on Main Street and it became known as the Water Tower #1. In 1928, another school building (known as Water Tower #2) was built on Roundabout Road for use by both Shelton High School and East Lyme Municipal Schools which amalgamated into one system in 1929. In 1933, Shelton Elementary School moved to its present location on Route 9 north of Center Avenue after being converted from an old farmhouse into a temporary school while construction of Permanent Schools began around that same time nearCenter Ave.. That same year also saw the opening of Golden Sunoco gas station next to Interstate 95 east of Center Ave., which has been continuously open since it opened with ExxonMobil filling up cars there ever since Finally in 1984 when Centre Ave re-opened after years of reconstruction following a fire that destroyed most of downtown including much of local business property, Oneonta Taxidermy closed their larger shop across from Centre Ave., but continues to do custom work here locally for those who cannot go out to see them until sometimes late at night or during weekends . Although located just down First St from where I am siting this evening typing this sentence I have driven by their place many times over my career doing work for clients here including 3 weddings last week all inside one day so if you are curious about what they do see I can tell you without any bias 🙂 Although much smaller than other nearby towns such as Danbury or East Windsor–Newington, Shelton has managed to maintain its cultural life throughout these changes while still maintaining close relationships with its numerous neighbors across several miles wide agricultural center flanked by suburban neighborhoods dating back centuries like Milford Junction to the south; White Sands Lake Park tothe west; New Britain Bay Naval Baseand Norwich Naval Air Stationtothe northwest; Upton Point Light Nuclear Generating Stationtothe northeast; various factories used for military purposes like Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Manufacturing Company’s plant outside Norwalk(laterRaytheon Missile Systems),General Electric Aerospace Industries main plantin Groveland(laterHoneywell International Plc.), United States Steel Corporation’s Scranton Worksplant adjacentonthe east( latterlyAlliant Techsystems), DuPont’s Wilmington Worksplant adjacentonthe north( laterAlcoa). Shelton, Connecticut is a town in Middlesex County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford-West Hartford-Ansonia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Shelton derives from the word "Sheltone" which means "a piece of land extending into a river." The first settler in what is now Shelton was James Sheltone who arrived in 1664 and named his new land for his friend and neighbor John Sheltone. In 1722, Colonel George Washington located a small cabin on what is now known as Nicholas Street in Shelton after hearing about some valuable Indian property that had been prospected by Samuel Putnam. In 1815, General Israel Putnam organized the towns of Ansonia and Tolland in Middlesex County to form what would become theHartford-West Hartford-Ansonia metropolitan statistical area. On November 3, 1820, Shelton became one of four towns within this metropolitan area when it merged with West Hartford to form an incorporated village called Ansonia. In 1865, during Reconstruction followed by the American Civil War (1861–1865), Shelton's population greatly increased due to soldiers coming home from service and many people coming overland through Canada looking for work or opportunity. This growth continued until World War II when most of ShelTON'S industrial production ceased because so much industry had relocated away from America during wartime spending priorities focus on war materials abroad instead. After World War II there was significant growth again as people returned to town for various reasons such as education opportunities available since post-war society had opened up across all levels thanks to Interstate 95 highway construction progressivism including two new universities – Yale University (established 1946) and Columbia University (Established 1948). As more people moved back into town they started businesses such as restaurants, bars/liquor stores etc., creating jobs both inside and outside of town limits while also preserving many old buildings like those around Main Street which have often been used as apartments or commercial properties ever since then becoming an important local landmark not only for its historical value but also its livability today given that much of downtown has been preserved with large open areas indoors devoid of traffic noise typical today on larger urban centers worldwide characterized by high densities of large apartment buildings although this can be changing with recent housing developments being centered around public transportation options like Park Slope subway station near 7th Avenue NW - making it easy to get around without having to walk far
