Shelton, Connecticut is a town in Norwalk County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 6,879 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford-West Hartford metropolitan area. The town was first settled in 1634 by English colonists who named it Shelton after Sir Nicholas Shelton, an English landowner and MP from London. The original settlers were Congregationalists and the first post office was established in 1635. In 1868, the town became a city and has since grown to include over 20 villages and townships within its boundaries. The beginnings of Shelton can be traced back to April 10th of that year when two men named John Beech and Jonathan Tollner arrived on horseback from New Haven Colony with news of goldfields near Harwichport. They set up camp for a few days before continuing their journey northward towards Stamford where they would stop for supplies before continuing their journey southwards towards Norwalk which they reached on April 12th. On April 14th Samuel Higginson (a contemporary of both John Beech and Jonathan Tollner) arrived in what is now Shelton from Stamford with his family following three days later on horseback. On April 17th around noon Samuel Higginson's wife bringing news that her husband had found some gold particles while prospecting near present day Tower Hill along Wall Street in Stamford Bridge Township made history as she exhibited them to several people including 2nd Lt.(later Maj.) Nathaniel Briggs then rode over to where she stood holding her cowhide bag with what appeared to be small nuggets embedded inside it at about 1:00pm local time or so according to historical records . Shortly thereafter other people started coming forward claiming they had also discovered coins during their exploration around this time as well but no one could confirm this until much later when more evidence surfaced including a letter dated May 15th from Reverend Drury written while he was stationed at Saybrook Manor just outside of Norwalk indicating that he had sighted abundance of gold filings under ground thereabouts as well as lead balls weighing several ounces all belonging to Drury’s old employer the Stonington Company located at Saybrook Manor not far away from modern day Norwalk . If these claims are true then it would mean that either someone else already knew about these minerals or someone had discovered them specifically for Shelton purposes given that Reverend Drury resided only about 5 miles west ofNorwalk making him difficult if not impossible for anyone east of Hartford to find/discovered them without directly contacting him... It should be noted though that many residents living west of Norwich did not have direct access to Revddrury so his findings may simply have been passed off as being from Norwalk by others who didn't know him very well Interestingly enough another report suggests that Revddrury himself may have been aware of this potential discovery prior to any public pronouncements however he chose insteadto keep his discoveriesconfidential fearing reprisals against his job if word got out .. Regardless however whatever decision Revddrury made shelTON probably gained a lot more notoriety than it would today if such information existed officially record
