Shelton is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 23,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Haven–Hartford-Bridgeport Combined Statistical Area. The first settlers in Shelton were farmers and their families who came overland from Great Britain in 1781. They built a log cabin on the site where they currently live. In 1814, Rev. Samuel Morse built a small chapel here as his home for religious services and to school children passing by on their way to church or other activities. In 1824, the first post office was established in Shelton with three sentries to keep watch over it; it served until 1840 when it moved to Bridgeport. A store opened here in 1829 and continued operation until 1904 when it closed because of competition from larger stores in Bridgeport and Hartford. The name Shelton comes from English settlers who arrived there in 1636 and named it for John Shelton, an owner of land in what is now North Haven. The first settler in what is now Shelton was Nicholas Higginson who built a cabin on the site in 1775. He also raised pigs and chickens on his farm until 1820 when he outgrew his property and moved to Waterbury where he became one of the first farmers to grow corn and beans on his land. In 1828 Nicholas’ grandson Isaac died leaving behind two farms which were sold to Major General Israel Putnam Sr., son of Colonel Israel Putnam (1758–1828), during the American Revolutionary War (1775–83). During the revolutionary war Major General Putnam used Shelton as a base camp for operations near Groveland and also used it as a wintering ground for troops under his command. In 1800 Samuel Green purchased 300 acres northwest of Shelton from Colonel Nathan Hale (1759–1822) including current day east side of Main Street Green began growing tobacco products at his plantation called “Greene†until 1825 when he replaced tobacco with beer as America’s primary drink. He donated some of this land to town trustees in 1835 who formed much of today's downtown business district including portions of Second Avenue northward from Market Street between State and Mulberry Streets; First Avenue southward from State Street between Mulberry and Church Streets; Second Avenue westward from New York Avenues between Church and Washington Streets; Fourth avenue southward from New York Avenues between Washington streets; Fifth avenue eastward from New York Avenues between Church streets In 1860 Nathaniel Wade bought 100 acres northwest of town along with all that remains today's east side of Main Street including present day northeast corner lot adjacent to Third Avenue ; Wade began growing apples which are still produced here today . After many years growth stopped within a few decades due largely to lack of capital or technology while new industries such as textiles revived over time
Shelton is a town in New England, United States. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford–West Hartford–East Haven, Connecticut Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Shelton was Nicholas Coddington who arrived on July 6, 1736. He and his family were among the first to platted what would become Shelton Township on November 3, 1739. The town of Shelton was formally organized on February 21, 1824 by act of the legislature following an application by Elijah Cummings and others for incorporation from parts of Farmington Township including most of what now stands within the town limits. The original plat included a square mile (1 km²) core surrounding which were nine small townships: Amherst, Bangor, Bethlehem, Cheshire East/Westphalia/Naugatuck Valley, Chesterfield/Erie Springs/Harrisonville Hills/Lehigh Valley Townships), each with its own pastor and internal school system. By 1828 there were over 100 residents in Shelton; it had grown to encompass all but one of the nine township communities plus four hamlets that formed its periphery – Arnolddale (now part of West Covina), Belmont (now part of Stamford), Brookline (now part of Danbury) and Easton (now part of Waterford). In 1840 property values had increased so much that a second plat was created incorporating those larger villages together into one entity with a total area just under 1 square mile (0.6 km²). That same year saw Shelton become home to Yale University after several years as temporary quarters for students attending neighboring colleges such as Brown University and Princeton University while these institutions built new campuses in South Hadley or White Plains. By 1860 Shelton had reached its peak population with 2,083 residents; it continued to grow through the late 1800s until declining during World War II due largely to declines in agricultural production which helpedompress funds available for military purposes; however since then the population has stabilized or even trended downward overall although recent growth has been modestly (+0.3% per capita since 2000) thanks in large measure to a influx of young people interested in staying close to family members or starting their own businesses downtown since 2001 when NewHartford opened up their business district adjacent to The Capitol Mall which has seen significant growth ever since according as well as expanding access to cultural attractions like Broadway Theatre & Museum located just across First Street from The Capitol Mall where events are also held every weeknight throughout summer months
