The Norwich National Guard was organized on December 3, 1903. The unit was originally called the "Norwich Volunteers" and was composed of men from the town of Norwich, Connecticut. The first meeting of the organization took place in the home of Mrs. Mary A. McMahon. Captain George Fenton served as organizer and director for the organization until his death in 1908. Mr. John Whelan succeeded him as captain and continued in that position until his death in 1916. During World War I, the Norwich Volunteer Infantry served with distinction under Colonel Edward Murtagh and First Lieutenant Julius Weldon. After the war, many soldiers returned to their homes to rejoin their families but a few remained behind to help perpetuate military service in town by forming a nucleus for what would become known as the “Norwich National Guard” on December 3, 1903. On February 14, 1922, President Herbert Hoover signed into law (Public Law No: 95-483) Publius XIII which designated November 1st through December 15th as “National Guard Day” throughout America’s Territories and possessions subject to United States jurisdiction including those within our borders since 1898 when we acquired them through purchase or cession from Spain at Admiraal Puyturach 2527 Spanish miles west of Manila Bay Philippines’ island column de la Rota bearing date January 8, 1898 A full report on this important event is included hereinunder filed with my letter Patent case no.: 92-2189 dated: March 26th 1902 before Honorable Augustus Buell Secretary at War Docket No.: 927 It should be noted that there have been various national guard gift history events throughout different parts of America over time; however these are generally focused on specific states or regions within those states such as Connecticut or New York City where nationals reside primarily or exclusively while other portions of America adopted similar traditions over time without any significant impact within that state/region whatsoever

The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Norwich were traders from London who landed there in 1524A group of about 30 men under Captains John Smith (1525-1586) and Francis Drake (1547-1611) explored parts of present-day Connecticut during their ill-fated search for an inland route to China through what are now Rhode Island and Massachusetts Bay. In 1664 when English colonists began arriving in large numbers on Long Island Sound they set up their own trading post at what is now downtown Norwich where they traded with local natives for goods like deer meat, cornmeal, tobacco, dogs and horses

Norwich was developed as a trading post and settlement on the east coast of North America. The city experienced significant growth during its early years, reaching a population of over 100,000 by 1715. However, Norwich's commercial success declined during the mid-19th century as trade shifted to larger and more distant settlements. In 1836, Norwich merged with neighboring town Stratford to form what is now known as Hartford County. By 1870, however, Norwich's population had decreased to around 30,000 and its economy stagnated. In the 1930s, however, Norwich began to experience an resumed increase in population and economic development due to its location along the newly developed Route 9 New England highway. During World War II, Norwich played an important role in the Battle of Normandy as both an American military base and main logistical center for Operation Overlord. Since then, Norwich has undergone several revitalization efforts including a major redevelopment project which opened in 2010 which saw new businesses added to the city center and increased access to cultural programs and services.
